My family is heading to Fort Wilderness this summer from Maine with our camper. We are stopping in Gettysburg on the way down. From Gettysburg I am not sure of the best route to take. I really don't want to drive through cities so I was thinking of going 81-77-26-95 instead of the 95 route. However, Google Maps just gave me an option of I81 for a bit and then picking up US 29. I know nothing about this road, but it seems like a two lane highway (at least for most of it) until I can pick up 95 in SC. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this route (or any other suggestions). Thank you.

Not sure what section of US 29 it is suggesting, but I live near it in NE PA. I would not suggest it for long travel. It's one of those roads like US 1 is up in Maine. 2 Lanes (each direction) , down to 1 lane (each direction) back to 2 lanes, etc.... Stop signs, stop lights, turns and cross streets. If you intent is a leisurely drive to see the country with no real time constraints, then I'd consider it, but otherwise, Probably not.

We took the 81-77-26-95 route last time. We liked it very much. Quite scenic with LOTS of cows to see (especially in WV, VA, MD stretches)

I'll chime in and agree with peg110 - we travel from Canada. We live just across the border from Upstate New York, about 25 miles west of the northern end of I-81.

Over the years we have tried a number of different routes but our favourite is 81-77-26-95. It bypasses the DC/Baltimore corridor altogether.

Pretty countryside, very few big cities and light traffic. Highly recommend it!

Nice overnight stops along the way - KOA at Wytheville VA and New Green Acres at Walterboro SC.

Thank you both. It was hard to tell on Google Maps. I was leaning toward the 81-77-26-95 route anyway.

From Gettysburg 81-77-26-95

I just drove it in early November. I live 1.5 hours west of Gettysburg. Its a nice ride, great view at the VA/NC border. A lot of truck traffic. sambuster
