I was just told my 10 year old nephew is being taken to the hospital. He had strep throat 10 days ago, took antibiotics, still has a sore throat and today his legs (calves) hurt so bad he can barely walk. The ER told them to go to the children's hospital nearby. What could this possibly be??? Any guesses? I'm worried!

Maybe he has the flu. I was just reading another post here that real bad leg pain is being associated with the flu.
Hope he'll be ok soon.

They thought my daughter had scarlett fever when she had those symptoms and strep!

Flu, if he hasn't been eating and drinking, possibly he has gotten dehydrated and his potassium has gotten low and causing muscle cramps.

Hopefully he just got the flu on top of the strep. He took antibiotics so I will bet it is something else.

Here are the complications of strep from WebMD....

<H3>Complications of strep throat infections
Complications of strep throat are rare but can occur, especially if strep throat is not properly treated with antibiotics. Complications can be related either to the strep infection or to the body's immune response to the infection.
Complications related to the strep infection

Although rare, complications can result from the strep infection spreading to other areas of the body. Infection can spread to the:
Other, more rare complications include:
Complications related to the body's immune response to strep bacteria

Sometimes in response to a strep infection, the body's immune system will attack healthy tissues, causing complications such as rheumatic fever, inflammation of the kidneys (glomerulonephritis), or pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS).
  • In rare cases, untreated strep may progress to rheumatic fever. Antibiotic therapy begun as late as 9 days after the start of a strep infection will prevent rheumatic fever.1
  • Glomerulonephritis may occur after infection with certain strains of strep bacteria. These infections may include a strep infection of the skin (such as impetigo), usually during the summer months, or the throat (such as strep throat), usually during the winter months. The condition is relatively rare and goes away without treatment, but complications can develop that may require treatment. Treatment of strep infection may not prevent inflammation of the kidneys from occurring.
  • PANDAS is a term used to describe what happens with some children who have symptoms of certain disorders that get worse following infections such as strep throat or scarlet fever. The disorders whose symptoms get worse include obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and tic disorders such as Tourette's Syndrome.

That's what I thought. It's possible he could still be infected with Strep. It's not unusual to need a second round of antibx.. The first case might not have cleared up, or he could've been reinfected.

Oh, remind the mom to throw away the toothbrush after a few days on the antibx. and get a fresh one. That's a biggie.

Could it be meningitis?? Thank you for the replies!!!

My son had this happen twice. His calves were so tight he couldn't walk (and he is my tough football player). He was crawling around the house. The first time we took him to "urgent care" and the doctor told us that he just needed to stretch. Thankfully, the next day we made an appointment with our regular doctor. We didn't know it but he had strep. Our doctor told us that strep does not only affect your throat, it can settle in many different places in the body. For my son, it attacks his calves first. He didn't have a sore throat either time he had step. After 24 hrs. on an antibiotic he was "good to go". Hopefully that is the case for you, too!

God bless you! Thank you so much! I hope this is it. He plays football as well :)

I had viral meningitis after a sinus infection or cold. I didn't go until my neck started bothering me. The symptoms for it and bacterial are pretty close, I think. I just didn't have a really high fever. My symptoms:

Neck Pain
Horrible horrible headache
Really bad ear pain
Aching joints
Nausea
Diarrhea
Occassional Hallucinations

My DD had something very similar to this when she was 14 months old. For over a week she ran a fever and just wasn't herself. She wasn't sleeping well and wasn't eating well. She was only 14 months old so she couldn't tell me what hurt, but she was fussy. I took her to the doctor TWICE. He looked in her throat and her ears and told me she was fine. He said that she is probably teething or has a touch of a virus. She was my first child so I believed him. Well, just exactly one week after I took her to the doctor the first time, she woke up from her afternoon nap kind of limping. She also would not bend one of her knees. I noticed that because she wouldn't bend over to pick up a favorite toy. I also took her outside and she normally would climb a certain hill, but she wouldn't even try. I felt her knee and it was warm. DH was out of town for work so I called my mom to ask what to do. She told me to bring her to the ER. I brought her in, and after talking to the nurse I could tell she was concerned. She called an orthopedic doctor in and he stuck a needle in her knee. Pus came out. They did emergency surgery on her that NIGHT at 10:30 PM! He told me that it had been a strep infection that wasn't treated. It had settled there in her knee. If they would not have gotten the infection out ASAP, it could have eaten away the knee, leg, or even been deadly. She was in the hospital for nearly 2 weeks on IV antibiotic. BTW, the rash had started to develop that very night. The doctor had noticed some of the spots on her chest. I had not noticed that. My focus had been on her leg/knee.
Needless to say I was FURIOUS at our pediatrician. We switched doctors right away!
She is healthy and fine today. I thank God for that! She has a scar, but she is fine.

It does sound like Scarlet Fever. Don't panic....my daughter had it when she was little, and she is just fine. What we know of as Scarlet Fever is not the horrible version that was killing people around the turn of the century.

I would get another dose of antibiotics, though....the strep might not be responding to the first one.

The other illness that comes to mind is Fifth's disease. In adults (I don't know how physically mature your son is), the illness can cause an arthritic condition. When I got it, I had the associated condition for almost two months.

I also agree that it sounds like Scarlett Fever. I remember being told my son had it and I almost fainted until the nurse put her hand on me and said "Sweetie it is NOT the disease it used to be, it's going to be fine!" and he was fine after taking his meds. That was about 6 years ago.

Oh my gosh! I have read all of the responses and it is a lot to take in. They are keeping him overnight -- they haven't diagnosed him yet, as far as I know. I hope it's going to be alright. My younger sis died of leukemia at 13 when I was 17 so I'm no stranger to tragedy in my family especially with young kids. I hope it isn't one of those times.

Thank you all so much for your support!

My son developed what nursetinnk's daughter had. HeinlechSchonnlein(Sp?) Purpurra(HSP). In his case he just broke out in what looked like mosquito bites on his legs. He had had baseball practice, so we dismissed it as bites, but the next day his ankle swelled so bad he couldn't walk on it, then his hands started swelling. After getting him to the dr, the dr not knowing, not knowing, and then my mom doing research on the internet and finding this(my brother had it when he was a kid) he was diagnosed with HSP. In DS case it was an undiagnosed case of strep(didn't run a fever that we knew of, or got sick)....ds is not a complainer at all, so he was probably feeling bad and just didn't say anything. In DS case we had to go every morning to get blood tests and urine tests for a few days and give him motrin every four hours(even waking him up for it).

Good luck---and it's good he's being sent to a children's hospital--they'll take care of him.

My son also had HSP when he was 5. He had strep and pnemonia(sp?) back to back and could not even walk to the bathroom it was so bad. We ended up at Vanderbilt Childrens Hospital to finally get a diagnosis. Good luck!!

There is a rash too.

Thanks again.

Sounds like scarlet fever. My DD had this before. Is the rash primarily on his torso? The good news is a round of stronger antibiotic should clear it right up.
