Urgent medical question: what could this be???

Many of you were right in the diagnosis!! It was strep that travelled to the muscles in his legs! He is home and on antibiotics and doing just fine! Thank you so much for your support. It was so helpful in getting my brother through the night at the children's hospital. I emailed him all of your responses and they were so reassuring to him. He had his blackberry with him at the hospital and was able to check his messages through the night.

Thank you again! :)

Glad he is on the mend! All's well that ends well. :)

 I am so glad he is better, and I am so glad our posts made your brother feel better!! It's nice to hear both!!!

Great to hear! I was looking for an update earlier and spelled your name wrong!

What a relief!

I have been gone all day and was unable to get an update until now. So glad that it all turned out fine! I was heading out the door when I originally posted but just had to tell my son's story....and am so relieved that it ended up being the same diagnosis. It can be so extremely stressful not knowing what is going on. I am still upset at the doctor that told us our son should just "stretch". But I am a little more educated about strep now and am glad I could pass on the info. :goodvibes

I'm glad he's on the mend! I've learned something new about strep due to this thread, I never knew you could get it in other parts of your body, so weird!

The scary part about this story for me is that he took the antibiotics and it didn't stop the spread.

We are always careful with strep here as my oldest has a repaired heart defect and the first place it will go will probably be to her heart.

My youngest is the kid that tests rapid negative and then gets scarlett fever. I think she has had it 3 times.:sad2:

Reading about the PANDA complication is certainly something I need to keep in mind for her.

I know that doc's treat strep like something common, but if you know your kid has complications with strep you should just be aware.:thumbsup2

My DD had something very similar to this when she was 14 months old. For over a week she ran a fever and just wasn't herself. She wasn't sleeping well and wasn't eating well. She was only 14 months old so she couldn't tell me what hurt, but she was fussy. I took her to the doctor TWICE. He looked in her throat and her ears and told me she was fine. He said that she is probably teething or has a touch of a virus. She was my first child so I believed him. Well, just exactly one week after I took her to the doctor the first time, she woke up from her afternoon nap kind of limping. She also would not bend one of her knees. I noticed that because she wouldn't bend over to pick up a favorite toy. I also took her outside and she normally would climb a certain hill, but she wouldn't even try. I felt her knee and it was warm. DH was out of town for work so I called my mom to ask what to do. She told me to bring her to the ER. I brought her in, and after talking to the nurse I could tell she was concerned. She called an orthopedic doctor in and he stuck a needle in her knee. Pus came out. They did emergency surgery on her that NIGHT at 10:30 PM! He told me that it had been a strep infection that wasn't treated. It had settled there in her knee. If they would not have gotten the infection out ASAP, it could have eaten away the knee, leg, or even been deadly. She was in the hospital for nearly 2 weeks on IV antibiotic. BTW, the rash had started to develop that very night. The doctor had noticed some of the spots on her chest. I had not noticed that. My focus had been on her leg/knee.
Needless to say I was FURIOUS at our pediatrician. We switched doctors right away!
She is healthy and fine today. I thank God for that! She has a scar, but she is fine.

This is so strange that you posted this. I have a friend who's daughter is at CMC in Charlotte with the same thing except her infection ended up in her hip. She has not had a rash that I know of. They have done surgery on her 3 times. The last surgery was this past Thursday and they cut her from her hip to her knee and cleaned it out. Hopefully they got everything out this time. She has been in the hospital for 11 days now. They are waiting to do a PICC line so she can be on IV antibotics when she comes home. Your post has given me so much hope that she will get better.

DD is fine. There were no after effects other than the scar on her knee from surgery. I was so scared!!!!!!!! It happened so fast, too.
What were the symptoms of your friend's DD? What happened with her?
I will pray for her and her family.

I am glad to report after 2 weeks in the hospital she got to come home. She had a total of 3 surgeries and had a picc line put in and will be on IV antibotics 3 times a day at home. She will be on the antibotics anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks. They said she had a strep infection that settled in her hip that turned into MRSA. In the last surgery that cut her from her hip to her knee and cleaned it out and washed it really good and that seemed to do the trick. Thank God. She belongs to my closest friend and I consider her and her brothers and sister my stepchildren. I have been so worried about her. My DH and I have been watching her brothers the whole time she was in the hospital but 1 night when we both had to work. So I had the joy of 4 kids at one time. (And I am also sure now that 2 was more than enough for me). We moved into their house and stayed for 2 weeks. We went home long enough to cook and eat. It was easier to cook at my house since I knew where everything was. I know her Mom and Dad are glad to be home and glad to be able to sleep in their own bed. I know I was glad to sleep in my own bed this morning. Thanks for all the prayers. They worked.
