Upset with Parish priest

((Hugs)) and prayers for your neighbor, Pixie Topaz. I can't imagine the double grief that she is going through right now.

I hope that once the initial shock wears off she'll have a chance to reevaluate the conversation with her priest. I don't know how close you are, but maybe you could gently encourage her to give the priest a call next week to tell him how upset she is.

Then he could either defend his preference for flowers (which is undefendable, of course) or explain what he really meant by Easter preparations.

I am not Catholic but have always assumed that this was the way things were done in any church. I am Baptist and we do not have service on Good Friday (just 3 services on Easter Sunday), but we all know that no weddings or funerals are held in the church on Easter weekend and its the same thing for the week of Christmas.

Now our preacher will gladly come to the funeral home and to the grave side to perform the funeral but just cannot do anything in the church. Our church ladies provide an after funeral meal for the family and even that would have been done away from the church. (we use the nearby community center if necessary or the meal is packed to go to the family's home.)

As a life-long Catholic, I always understood that no funerals were done on Good Friday or Holy Saturday.

My mother died early on Holy Thursday, and the priest was able to come here for a blessing. We were grateful that it was early & he was available to come out to the house. We'd like her Memorial Mass on Saturday, April 10th, but the Church is not available that day, so we're waiting until the 17th.

I'm hoping that in the OP's friends' situation, that she misunderstood, or that someone passed along the wrong info. (& no way is a church decorated for Easter on Good Friday - that is done on Holy Saaturday)

I'm very sorry for your loss:hug:

I am a 'lapsed' Catholic but I went through 12 years of Catholic school. There are no funerals on Easter weekend or on Sundays.

Had to close the thread due to posters disregarding the rules against religious discussion on the DIS. Please do not start a new thread.
