Aren't they worried that someone may steal the item - would UPS be responsible?

You'd think they'd be worried, but I guess they don't care?:confused3
Heck if I know.

The internet company I work for uses UPS to ship the majority of its orders. Yes, if UPS leaves a package w/o a signature, they are responsible if it's stolen (unless the addressee has left specific instructions for the pckg to be left). The shipper must initiate the claim, however.

Hope that helps! :)

It doesn't bother me too much if I'm not at home - if it's something big that I know is coming like when we ordered a computer from Dell I make sure someone will be there. What irks me is when I AM home and they cannot be bothered to ring the bell - I open the door to go to work and a box is sitting on the steps :confused3 Must have magically appeared :tink: because I never hear them and we live in a ranch.:tiptoe:

I think it all depends on the driver. I've had great drivers that would blow the horn and ring the bell. I'v had drivers that would just ring the bell. Lately I have a driver that just drops and runs.

When I lived in Virginia the first time UPS ALWAYS left my packages at the door. I loved it. So much more convenient as no one is home during the day. When I moved to an apartment in Cincinnati, I always had to drive into the city to a not very nice area to UPS and then have them debate whether or not to give me my package because I had a Virginia driver's license and that's what they used to verify packages. I just stopped ordering things when I lived there.

Yes the are responsible. I sell on Ebay and a package delivered must of been stolen from the porch. Thank Goodness I issurred it. It took about 3 weeks but I received my money back, and refunded the buyer.

In the news recently there was a report of a couple who had been following around UPS trucks in the weeks before Christmas snatching packages off porches. The authorities found a housefull of loot and were having a heck of a time sorting it all out because much of it had been opened and unpacked. This was at the IL/IN border. Nice, huh?

I recently had a big struggle with the post office getting a package that was mailed long before Christmas. The post office received it but couldn't be bothered with letting me know. They ended up shipping it back and then the shipper tried sending it to me again. This time the mailman stuffed it into the mailbox somehow and though the packing was torn, at least the contents were OK. This is one time that I wish UPS could have left it on the porch!

Since I am never home when ups delivers I would rather have them leave it then try to deliver again and again and have me go to the place and pick it up. I get an average of one package a week and they usually leave it on my patio and no I have never had anything stolen. The driver did once drop it off at the apartment complex office next door which was a little weird since my condo complex does not have an office nor is it with the apartment complex at all. Luckily I was able to figure it out and track it down!

A man I once knew had his sister's wedding photos sent to his house from the photographer. UPS dropped the package at the door but the neighbor's dog got it. Everything was ruined, even the negatives which they had opted to purchase. No UPS wasn't liable. Through small claims court, the photography studio had to refund him his money as they should have made sure it was shipped to be signed for but that didn't replace the memories lost.

Ours do that too. And yesterday I was expecting a shipment from Dell. They make you sign for it so i stayed home just for that and I never heard them knock, ring the bell, anything. the dog didnt bark either and there is this note on the door. "Tried to deliver, rescheduled..." What??? I was 10 feet from the doorbell and actually heard the truck drive away! Arrrgghh

I've not had many problems with ups but they never do alert me when I have a package. As an example, tonight I checked the porch 4x's because I am expecting a package either today or tomorrow. I don't want to leave it out over night because there are some teens in my neighborhood that would just love to destroy things. Now usps is another situation entirely. They stuff the mailbox to overflowing, never ring the bell, and as of late we have had more damaged mail from them than anything.

not sure who'd be responsible, but you can request that things are not to be left on your porch. I am not really worried about it, I have never had anything stolen, and I am never gone so long that it would sit there for more than a few hours!

They always leave thingson the steps around here. My neighbor was at work and they don't get home until after 7pm and one day I looked out and there were 2 big boxes not even ON the step but sitting in front of the step that said DELL all over them... made sure that morning to keep an eye on that pacakage but then in the afternoon it started to rain so I ended up going and carrying the boxes into my house and keeping them until they got home, I didn't want them sitting out there in the rain all day!

I've only ever had one problem. Last summer I was ordering several pairs of shoes from Zappos and there was one box that never made it. Zappos was awesome about it -- sent me another pair without question immediately! UPS was pretty aggravating though. They kept calling me to get "my side of the story," because the driver insisted that he put it on my porch. Thing is, I was home all day, as was my DS. We live on a small side street and I always hear when UPS or another delivery comes by, and the dog ALWAYS barks. I don't know how many times they called me to talk about it, but I was getting pretty angry because it was to the point where I felt they were accusing me of lying.

They leave packages outside my front door too and then ring the doorbell. Doesn't really bother me because I have never had a problem with anyone messing with them. I like that better because I am often not home to sign for a package. With Fedex, I always miss them, it's frustrating.

You can pay for signature service with all the major carriers...no siggy--then they can leave it at your door. It is between you and the sender at that point.
