Upgrading to AP prior to check in?

We are traveling to Universal this January and I was able to secure an AP rate at Portofino Bay for the time of our stay. We have already purchased etickets from Undercover Tourist. My question is, when should I upgrade one of the etickets to an AP—before checking in on the day of our arrival or before we leave? I thought I read somewhere that it might be more financially advantageous to upgrade the ticket at Universal. Is that true? Is there a way to easily do the upgrade at our hotel so that we don’t have to walk with all of our luggage to the ticket area at the park? Also, Which annual pass do I upgrade to? I saw there was several different ones and so now I’m a bit confused. I really just want the most basic one that will work for our AP rate.

The lowest cost one that will still give you the hotel discount is the seasonal pass. This pass has blackout dates, so be sure to check those before you buy.

The next level up includes half priced parking.

Are the AP rates expected to increase prior to January 12, 2019? That’s when we leave for our trip. Just debating if I should purchase in advance or wait and upgrade UT ticket once there? Also, not even sure I can return an eticket bought with Undercover Tourist?
