Upgrading to AP - now or later?

I have a 9 day park hopper already purchased for our fall trip (not part of a package). I've decided now that I'll be taking another, smaller, trip to WDW in the spring. Is there a way I can upgrade to an AP now so I can go ahead and get the TiW card and use the discounts for our fall trip in addition to the spring trip? Or do I need to wait until I get there this fall? If that's the case, do I upgrade after one day? Can I still get the TiW card to use for that trip?

Did you purchase your ticket directly from Disney or through a third party? If you purchased from a third party, you'll need to use the ticket and upgrade it in person. You can only upgrade a ticket within 14 days of first use, so you can't wait until the second trip to do the upgrade. After you upgrade, you can purchase a TiW card.

If you did purchase directly from Disney, you can upgrade your ticket in advance. Then you could order a TiW card and have it mailed to you. But the TiW card is activated when it's purchased, so there's very little benefit to buying in advance.
