Upgrading to AP; equal or greater value?

Can anyone confirm what Disney's policy says in regards to upgrading to AP? Somewhere, sometime ago I read it. I don't know if it was on Disneyland.com or where but I can't find it. Since the 5 for 3 days cost $169, in order to upgrade do you have to upgrade to the AP of GREATER or EQUAL value? I have heard both. Has anyone actually traded in the $169 ticket for a SO Cal pass? These are Costco 5 days for cost of 3 if that matters. Thanks

You can upgrade to any pass. Just make sure that at the time you upgrade it's the last day of your visit and that it's not on a blackout date.

You can apply the value of an unused ticket or pass, or even a partially used one with days left on it, toward the purchase of a higher-priced pass, as long as you do it before your pass expires. For instance, if you buy a 3-Day Park Hopper and then decide on the third day of use that you'd rather have an Annual Pass, you can apply the value of the Park Hopper toward the Annual Pass. Discounted passes will be credited at the actual rates you paid. Yes, Disney can tell how much you paid. It's encoded on the pass. To upgrade a pass, go to any Guest Services window.


My guess would be that it would have to be greater than or equal (leaning more towards greater than) to the cost of what you bought.
