Upgrading to an AP

I have a trip booked in May and am thinking about upgrading to an AP because I am doing an internship in Florida this summer!

I really know nothing about AP's, so any advice would be appreciated.

My 2 biggest ?'s are:

1.How/when should I upgrade?

2. For my May trip, I have a 8 day MYW with PH. I read that you can upgrade your ticket to an AP and they will give you a discount. Could anyone approximate how much that discount would be in my case?
