does anyone know---can unused tickets, bought from another vendor not from Universal, be ugraded at Universal once we get there?

I think the ticketmaster tickets were not upgradeable. Where did you purchase your tickets? We upgraded a Kroger ticket to an annual pass.

from mapleleaf. they sent us an even nicer ticket than we ordered (not by mstake, they had run out) and now the ticket value seems awfully close to the price of an AP. if we could upgrade, we could use it for next year's vacation....

If you're planning on upgrading to the AP, you should be OK. You might want to call Guest Services to confirm though.

Most tickets can be upgraded but a few can not. Is it a flex-ticket (one that includes seaworld or Busch Gardens)? Some of those can't be upgraded if they have been used? If it is just a regular multi-day ticket from Maple Leaf, it won't be a porblem.

I'm debating upgrading to a power pass...I just realized that our 3 day ticket is only $6 less than the power pass. Is this upgrade possible? They were purchased as a package with the hotel stay. DH probably won't want to upgrade, but the kids and I might. We live an hour away and would probably do this instead of renewing our WDW Ap's.

Since you live so close, I would recommend the Preferred AP for yourself and the Power Pass for the kids. The Preferred will get you free parking and park discounts and if you're going to come back often, the Preferred AP will pay for itself in no time.
