I have free dining in September. DD and I want to go back for a short trip in December then another family trip before the year is over.

How do I upgrade to an annual pass? Can I do it when we arrive, so I don't have to worry about the number of days used? We will be there for 14 days. We now have hopper and the plus, but don't care about the extras.

You can do it any time during the vacation (before using or within 14 days since starting to use the ticket). You need to do it at a Guest RElations booth at a park or Downtown Disney. If you already started using the ticket, upgrading to annual pass costs the same but the annual pass starts on the first usage date.

It is better to request that the admission ticket be a separate card from the room key and dining card at check in. Otherwise you might have to return to the resort to have the dining part redone.

If someone had used a water park admission, upgrading his card to annual pass must go all the way to premium annual pass.

The following are quotes from the section "Upgrades: Magic Your Way Tickets to Annual Passes" from the Cast Portal (updated 8/9/06). (Note - the first paragraph below is a paraphrase combining parts of two paragraphs and leaving the technical instructions out, the other two paragraphs are quotes.)

Because MYW tickets are configured to expire based on FIRST USAGE and Annual Passes are configured to expire based on DATE OF ISSUE, Cast Members must manually enter the expiration date to be one year from the original ticket's FIRST USAGE.

Guests are able to upgrade or modify their MYW tickets any time within 14 days of first use, regardless of whether the No Expiration Option is purchased. After 14 days no ticket modifications or upgrades may take place.

When upgrading to Annual product, if the Guest's original ticket included Water Park Fun & More Option, and any part of that option was used, then the Guest may only upgrade to the Premium Annual Pass.

Of course you cannot use more than one pass to upgrade to an Annual, it must be a one to one relationship only.

One more question, this will not change the free dining part?

I suggest not trying to upgrade at the hotel, upgrade at one of the parks. In 2005 we did the Free Dining and because we already had APs at the time we save our room keys (they had the tickets on them) so when our APs expired we could use the ticket on the room key towards upgrading. When I asked at the hotel to do this the CM said I couldn't. Went to another hotel CM and he said the same thing. I freaked a little, but thought ok if I can't upgrade then I'll just save the tickets for some 1 day trip when passing through the area. The next morning we went to AK and I thought let me try one more time. CM said sure, no problem. I think of it like this. I'm not going to ask a park CM about my resort so why ask a resort CM about tickets. Sure maybe they should know, doesn't mean they do know.

As far as taking away your free dining because you are upgrading, no they won't unless you try to upgrade before the trip.

The Resorts cannot issue APs. It can only be done at a park (including water parks and TTC) ticket booth or Guest Relations Office (or GRO at DTD).

Some people have reported that converting a Key To The World to an AP can cause the messing up of the Dining Plan. There are two ways to be sure this does not happen.

One is to, at check in, ask that the passes be on separate cards than the KTTW. This can be done, but some desk clerks don't like to or don't know how to do this.

The other is after the conversion use your KTTW to buy a snack on the Dining Plan. If it shows a problem, you will have to go back to your Resort Front Desk (preferably before having any subsequent meals) to have the problems resolved. The Parks do not have access to the Reservations/Rooms computer.
