Upgrading LMT tickets to APs??

It is the price you actually paid for the ticket in almost all cases. I'm not sure what you mean by LMT ticket, but when I talked to a Disney Travel rep and asked about upgrading they told me it was the what you actually paid for the ticket (we were looking at a package that included a 5 days for the price of 3). It should be the same for all types of tickets.

Others have talked about upgrading tickets they received free through contests, GAD etc, and generally get the value of the ticket for those, but if you buy a ticket, then you should get the price you paid in credit toward your AP.

In April I bought a 3-Day Park Hopper for $148 and some change from LMT (Last Minute Travel, for those who aren't sure what that stands for) and upgraded to a Deluxe AP the morning of the 3rd day. I was expecting to pay $151-ish, which would be the price difference from what I paid for the hopper and the cost of the AP. Instead I was charged $115, which would be the price difference if I had bought the hopper online for $184. Anyway, I mentioned to the Cast Member that I had bought the ticket at a discount, told her how much I paid, etc. and that I was prepared to pay the full difference. She thanked me for my honesty and said this was fine, so I just paid the $115 -- bringing my AP to a total of $263. I'm not sure if this is normal or not, though.

That's what I had heard. It's kinda like buying at a discount at a credit union. They actual credit union price you paid isn't encoded in the ticket, the "online puchase value" is. I'll be going in October after my AP expires. I'm looking to get another AP, so I wanted to weigh the cost difference between buying a straight AP or upgrading a LMT ticket. I'm still crossing my fingers the prices will come back down after summer.

Once you use your ticket they can't see the discount price. As long as you use your ticket once before you upgrade you will be good.

With Disneyland, expect to be charged the price you paid. If you get a sweet CM, all the better, but at Disneyland, they don't bridge the cost, they can see the price you paid, and in fact there's one ticket that if upgraded to an AP you end up paying more out of pocket for that AP than if you just bought the AP (military discounted tickets from base).

The GAD can be upgraded because they've made them upgradable....most free tickets won in contests, IF purchased originally at extreme discount for contest purposes, won't be able to be upgraded. It just all depends on how the tickets were purchased by those who gave them away...
