Upgrading hotel just before/on arrival?

Is it possible to get very good rates if you upgrade hotels say the day before you leave or on arrival?

Someone suggested we might get a cheap price to upgrade to a better hotel.

At DLP you will be charged the rack rate of the room (ie scarily expensive ) if you choose to upgrade when you arrive at the resort. If you want to upgrade, do it when there is a discount offer on the hotel of your choice, and before you get to DLP.
