upgrading from child ddp to adult???

My nine year old is an adventurous eater. We usually go during free dining. Has anyone ever upgraded a child to an adult on the ddp during free dining?
If so about how much was the cost?

You will need to register the child on the room reservation as being 10 years old.

The difference will be the cost difference between the child's park ticket and the adult park ticket.

We did it in March this year for our 9-year-old as well. We had free dining and the cost to upgrade his park ticket cost us $20 for our 7 day tickets, so it was definitely worth it. Although several places (mostly quick service) he ended up choosing the child's meal anyway, but at least he had the choice. The only other cost you have to figure in besides the park ticket is that it will affect your meal tips - i.e. if you're doing a buffet or a character meal, your total will be 3 adults (maybe $35+ each), instead of 2 adults and a child (usually around $15 or so for buffet at most places).

But it was totally worth it to us in our case so he didn't have to feel like he was getting less of a choice than us, or that we got "fun" desserts and he got offered grapes as a dessert on the kids meal.

AND they may charge you for him adult ticket price to do this...just thought of that...

If you upgrade while under a free dining promotion, you will pay the difference between a child ticket and an adult ticket. If you decide to upgrade beyond the plan that's offered (e.g. QSDP to DDP, or DDP to DxDDP), you will also pay the adult cost to upgrade that plan.

While not under a free dining promotion, you simply pay the adult prices for tickets and dining (yes, there are people that upgrade outside of free dining )

Now, the phone CMs are pretty bad in general, not sure what the situation was for the quoted post here, but it seems strange. She was probably wrong (they often are).

Changed our 9 yr old to 10 and it was about $20 more. Well worth it.

We decided to do this for our next trip as well. We were there in May and the QS kids meals just weren't cutting it for our 8 year old anymore. He loves chicken fingers, so was always a little disappointed that he got the yucky little kids ones and he was a little put out when we all got a decent dessert and he got the mandatory cookie over and over.
Now, you will pay the cost to upgrade another adult if you move up to from a Quick Service plan to the DDP. In that case you have to decide if it's worth it. If you are doing a lot of character meals (buffets) then children will have the same TS choices as all the adults.
If we upgrade to the DDP we'll probably leave him at 8 and continue to give him my dessert since I don't care for them much anyway.

An amendment to my earlier post. Out of curiosity I just priced out a reservation on the Disney site for where I am staying for the exact same dates.
When I initially booked on the phone, I said that my child was 8 but we'd like to list him as 10 so he could do the adult quick service (we have free quick service).
The cast member assured me that was allowed and we would pay the cost to upgrade to an adult ticket. We just have 2 day tickets on this package.

It came to 3208.83

However, when I price the exact same package that I have on the website, with my son listed as 10, it comes out to 3028.82.

We are staying for 8 nights. So I don't think it's the 16 dollars per day mentioned above.
I am really confused at what could be causing the 180 difference between the reservation I have and the one I am being quoted on the website

Guess I will call and find out. That's always a fun process calling long distance from Canada

If you can't find it on your confirmation you will have to call; you'll probably have to call anyway to remove it if you don't want it. I don't book packages, but I have heard that happens with packages.

The only difference should be that you are now purchasing an adult park ticket instead of a child's.

Thank you! I'll check for the insurance because that would make sense. I'm glad I checked at all or I wouldn't have realized there was an issue.
I'll report back what I figure out.

So it's not insurance. Hmmm.
I have to drop a day off the reservation anyway because we've decided to stay close to the airport our last night (and nope, it not that causing the other money, I checked an 8 day reservation which is what I have).
I'm inclined to rebook at the rate that's coming up now (minus the day I am dropping), and then call and have them transfer the deposit on my other ressie and cancel it.
A) because it will be faster
B) because I can be assured of getting the better rate if I book it and I won't have to worry about them telling me no for some reason.

FWIW though, anyone in the same situation (where you list a child as 10 to get the adult QS) it's worth running the numbers yourself to make sure it's correct.

The $20 is talking about during Free Dining and using the promotion. Since the dining plan is free for both adults and children, the only difference is in the cost of the adult ticket vs the cost of the child ticket.

For example, a 10day adult base ticket is $318 (before tax). A 10day child base ticket is $300 (before tax). Adding the 6.5% tax would make them about $338 and $319, thus a difference of about $20 (it's more like $338.67 and $319.50).

Now, if you're doing this without the free dining promotion, it is a lot more. The same $20 would apply (for tickets (it'll probably be slightly less for 8 day rather than 10 day, but I already closed that tab)), plus the $37/night charge to upgrade from child DDP to adult DDP would also apply. So, for a 7 night trip, the upgrade cost would be roughly $20 + ($37*7) or $20 + $259 or $279. Quite a bit steeper, though still some people prefer to do this rather than force kids' meals on their kids all week.

I upgraded my 7 yr old twins on the DDP for our next trip and the cost during free dining was ONLY difference between the adult ticket and child........

we also had a load of problems when trying to change the boys ages the Cm on the phone told me that it could not be done,I tried another few times and eventually got a CM to change the ages to 10

My kids ages aren't saved in the system. If they are saved one year to the next you can just correct them on your reservation or have a CM correct them. I know one family that had their kids ages saved BUT they didn't increase in 2-3 years so she had to correct them with the CM because they were now Disney adults.

When you book you next Disney holiday you just tell them your kids ages "for real" and if they tell you they have been saved different you can say you upgraded them to the Adult Dp and now would like the ages re registered
