Upgrading? Entire Stay?

I apologize if this is covered somewhere but I can't find it and I didn't get any search results.

We are planning a trip for probably Feb 2013 when there is free dining. I have already figured out its worth it for my family going with 5 adults.

If we upgrade from quick service to regular- do we have to do it for the entire stay?

The ONLY reason I would be considering upgrading is for TS credits for character meals. I can live without character meals and my son will only be 2 so he won't know what he is missing if we don't do them this time.

I have no interest in TS otherwise as I don't want to commit our time to eating.

Yes, if you upgrade plans you would have to do so for your entire trip, for everyone in your party. The DDP is based on the # of nights you are staying, so for a 6 night trip you would get 6 table service meals, per person, to use.

Yes, you have to upgrade for the entire trip. Here is a link I have bookmarked that includes all the free dining information and release date info:

Thank you both.
I did see that link but I still don't see that it specifically states you have to upgrade the whole stay in that post.

I assumed we would have to based on many requirements being everyone in the room, the entire stay, etc.

I think we may just pay oop to do a character meal or skip it all together.

Thanks again!

You're planning on free dining in Feb? I wouldn't. They usually don't have it for that time of year.

But yes -- unless you book your days as 2 or more separate reservations, you will have the same dining plan for the entire length of your stay. IMO if you're only doing 1 TS meal you're better off paying for that one meal OOP than upgrading for the entire stay.

Well, we are not set on February. I was basing it off of having two periods of FD in Feb 2012 and one in Feb 2011.

Once the dates are released, we will pick our week to go. We can go pretty much any time; I am more interested in lower prices and crowds than the specific week we go on vacation.

You do have to upgrade for the entire stay. There is no way to have different dining plans on different nights without having totally separate room reservations. If you want the quick service plan and only one or two character meals, pay for the character meals OOP. If you want a character meal every day, then consider upgrading.

The last 2 years they had FD the week before Pres. Week -- there were other specials that I think were actually better in previous years. And we're saving more money with room discounts than we would save on the DDP. But like you said -- you did the math and it would work for you, but you should check the room rates for those dates to see what you would be paying on that package.
