So I know that you can buy an AP and use it that day even if it is a blackout day. But what if you already have an AP and you would like to upgrade it, and the upgrade is still blocked out. Are you still given the pass to use your AP that day?

Yes. But like any upgrade, tell them you'll want a block out ticket before you start the transaction to make sure they can give you one. Just be aware that in addition to not prorating the cost of the upgrade, if you had a renewal discount you'll have to pay the full difference between the price you paid this year and the current gate price. If it's just for 1 day, you may be better off buying a 1 day, 1 park ticket than upgrading.

I tried to do that for my daughter last summer and they said no, she would still be blocked and wouldn't be able to enter the parks.

So it worked for you? Conflicting experiences can make things so confusing!

It was 2 years ago. I do know of one case where someone tried to do it when there was a gate closure and was told no. That's why I always suggest asking if they're able to give a blockout pass before upgrading a ticket.

Pretty sure she was given wrong info.

A gate closure?

We upgraded on a blocked day a few years ago without issue. I haven't read of any problems about this since but for the instance above (not counting gate closure cause that's a bit different and a rare situation.)

I will say that there may not be official policy on this, perhaps someone on here knows. If there is not actual written policy then I would expect to be admitted but preared to be denied.

Disney land use to let you pay an upgrade fee to enter the parks on Black out days, they no longer offer this, you will have to pay full admission to get it *source- we tried

Yes- unfortunately that option has been gone for years...
