Upgrades: What if???

Right now, I am in a cat. 12 guaranteed room. When I booked just a few weeks ago, the cat 10's, 11's and 12's were all guaranteed status only. Of course, I would love to be upgraded. If I'm not, that's fine too. But anyway, my question is this. If I get upgraded, let's say to a 10, and then I decide I would like to pay for an upgrade to a 7. Would I only have to pay for the difference between the 10 and a 7, or the difference between the 12 (which is what I paid for) and the 7?????? Anyone ever in this situation??? Just thinking I would love to get a navigator's verandah if it was only a few hundred dollars more but not for 800.00 more which is about what it would cost me now.

You would pay the difference between what you originally paid for the cruise (Cat. 12 guarantee) even if they assigned you a Cat. 10. That would be a free upgrade. You would still need to pay the difference between what you paid and whatever the upgrade cost is at the time you want to switch.

On our cruise we were given a quote for a cash upgrade to cat 5, which we said "sure" to - then they found out they had no more cat 5's available so bumped us to a cat 4 at no additional cost - which I thought was pretty cool.

So my guess would be that if you got upgraded by DCL to a 10 and then you asked about cash upgrades to something higher, the difference would be between the 10 and the higher, not the 12 and the higher. That's just my guess though.
