We booked a cruise w/DCL with our points. Had some banked and not sure if we'd have used them otherwise. The couple that was was to go with us has since cancelled for pers. reasons and the wife and I want to know if anyone has upgraded a cabin catagory using points or when original booking was with points. Can't find anything on the DCL Disboards, and using search her was fruitless. any help is appreciated.:)

They don't upgrade rooms so I doubt that they would upgrade cabins.

I have booked an inside cabin on points and was upgraded to an ocean view room - no additional charge or points.

Maybe someone on the cruise board here would know. There's often talk about upgrades there.

Leaving in 2 weeks, I booked an 8A gty on points and was upgrade to a 5B about 2 weeks ago.

Not sure if you are looking to pay more out of pocket for an upgrade or if you are asking about a complimentary upgrade.

There are a few possibilities depending upon the specifics of your situation.

1. If you want to spend additional points on a better cabin for yourself, that may be possible. It all depends upon availability. Since it's a change to the existing reservation, you would have to pay $95 fee again.

2. If you want to spend additional cash on a better room, things get trickier. Individuals must be paid for using cash OR points...not a combination of both. If there are just two of you, you could use points for one person and pay cash for the other. Depending upon the cost of the upgrade, that may or may not be feasible.

The other thing you could do is ask about paying for an upgrade upon arrival at the port. If the ship has unbooked higher-priced cabins, they will often quote a fee to upgrade. The fees are usually pretty reasonable, but there is no way of knowing whether this option is even available until you are preparing to board the ship. And you probably won't have any control over your cabin location.

3. If you are looking for a free upgrade, that does happen with points cruises but I'm not aware of any way to force a free upgrade or even improve your odds. You can't request a complimentary upgrade--if they know you are interested, they will try to sell you a higher priced cabin.

Good luck.

A) Pixie dust upgrades happen randomly. No rhyme or reason to who gets them, but they only happen if your cruise is not sold out. They don't happen often, though many ppl report them here on the boards.

B) The other kind of upgrade that can happen is a purchase-at-port upgrade, and again, if higher category rooms than the one you booked is not sold out, there is the possibility of a upgrade. DVC'ers on the Cruise board have mentioned its possible when cruising on points before. Basically if they have extra rooms for whatever the difference is between the cash price of your booked category (not a cat you've been pixie dusted up to), they pick an amount that is less than that, often somewhere around half that you can pay that price at the port to upgrade.

We booked a cruise on DVC points (7 days, Mexican Riviera, outside stateroom).

We upgraded at the port for cash to a verandah.

Is that what you are asking about doing?

Here's the situation. We booked adjoining cat 9b (porthole ) cabins. The couple with us has since cancelled. My DW and I would prefer Cat 7 or 6 cabins w/a nav. veranda or Veranda. Can i call DVC and upgrade w/pts? Since we've already booked w/pts. an upgrade should not be that many more points will it? I understand it will be another $95 fee. The Cruise is for a Western Carrib. in Feb.

Cat 9 looks like 175-180 points per person for Feb 13. Cat 6 / 7 would be 190 to 196 pp. Probably not a huge difference.

$95 fee would apply and they would have to have availability to make the change.

I would not recommend waiting if you want to make the change. DVC members have had difficulty booking DCL or even changing existing reservations on less than 6-9 mos notice in recent years.

Good luck.

I agree, no one know why some get upgraded and other don't. We have been on 4 Disney cruises. Some with points, some with cash. We have NEVER been upgraded on any of the cruises we've gone on.
