Hi - I have read many of you say that you have upgraded to concierge at check in. When this happens, do you pay less or more than if you would have originally booked concierge? Do you ask or were you offered the upgrade? And, does it appear that this happens more often at some resorts that at other resorts? Thanks in advance for any info you can share. Sherry :D

I'd be surprised if they upgraded you for free at check in. I am not sure how they would benefit from that. In fact, the resort would seem to have an incentive not to fill the room just for the sake of filling a room. First, they typically want to make concierge guests feel special. The less crowded the lounge and concierge floor, the happier their concierge guests will be. Plus, you will be eating food. They've already got your money and they do not have to give you food. If they upgrade you for free, then they are actually losing money since they will now be supplying you with food.

Having said that, there's no harm in trying.

I worked in the hotel business while in college and this is actually quite common. Hotel companies use this as a marketing tool and because they are not really losing anything on the food or staff because the food and staff will be there regardless of whether all the rooms are filled or not. They often do this in hopes that people will get a taste of the good life and come back for more. They also do this so you will tell people. Then they hope that people you tell will book at the same resort (naturally their higher end) in hopes of an upgrade themselves.

If you really want an upgrade ask the front desk person if all the concierge rooms are filled. If not, consult with your spouse as if you're making a decision. If they are going to offer a free upgrade it will come now, if not....good try. If a free upgrade isn't offered you could always ask if you could get a discount on an upgrade. The worst thing they could say is no...

Back in May of 2001 we were booked at a regular rate room at the Yacht Club. At check-in we received a room on the 5th floor. ONLY from these boards did I know that the 5th floor was conceirge. DH was not sure so we asked the gentleman bringing up our luggage and he said that was true - we had concierge level! The only thing I had asked the CM at check-in was if we could have a room close to the elevator since during our last trip we were waaaaaaay over near the Dolphin and it was a hike to everything with 2 small kids. We did not pay anything extra. (At the YC you need a special pass key to get up to the 5th floor)

Of course Disney knew what they were doing and once DH had a taste of concierge we never went back to regular rooms. :)

During our next trip (2 weeks!) we will be staying 14th floor tower conceirge room at the Contemporary for the first time, and concierge at the Boardwalk Inn for the second time.

Yes, Disney was VERY smart in up-grading our family! :)

Oh my..... I wasn't expecting a free upgrade. If I ask and there is something available, I fully expect to pay. :D I am one of those who if I want a Savannah view, I book a Savannah view rather than taking my chances on a free upgrade at check in. I just didn't know if once we got there and we decide to splurge and if there any rooms available, if we would have to pay rack rate even if we had originally booked with a code. My DH usually gets a bonus the first pay Dec which will be 2 days before we leave. We will have no idea of the amount until then. So, I don't want to book concierge until we know the amount. If it is a good one we may splurge if something happens to be available when we get there. But if there is not anything available, it is not a big deal. I seem to remember posts especially from individuals staying at WL saying they were able to upgrade at check in. I just didn't know if it happened mainly at WL or if other resorts sometime have concierge rooms available too and if individuals who upgraded at check in were charged the same amount they would have been charged had they originally booked concierge or rack rate or some other amount.

I'm meeting my sister & her family at AKL next month. She will be arriving a day before us, and has a savannah view room - we're booked in a standard. What are my chances of upgrading to an adjoining room?

50/50. Ask exactly like you posted and if theres anyway the CM can, I'm sure she will....

It completely depends on how full the resort is, and if the room next to her is unoccupied. In all honesty, your chances would be significantly better if you booked a poolview. Upgrades from standard to poolview, or poolview to savannah view seem farily commonplace. Upgrades from standard to savannah are not nearly as likely to hapen.

ok-the cheap chick is gonna jump in here now. We're booked at POR next weekend in a standard view room but would love to upgrade to a king bed, since it's our anniversary. I'm thinking that the chances of a free upgrade are slim to none at the time we're going.

I still would like to know if we paid for the upgrade to king, would be pay the difference between the code rate and rack rate, or would we pay the difference between the standard and king code rate?

Did that make any sense whatsoever?

It makes sense, and most likely you will pay the difference between the standard rack rate for both. I think it's only $10 more per night for the king, so I'd go for it! It is your anniversary!

We have been upgraded standard to concierge at WL and from standard to pool view at AKL. Both times we were there only one night. If I had wanted savannah view I could have upgraded for $65.00 more which was signigicantly less had I booked the savannah to begin with. Neither times did I request anything. It was just given to me! I will admit I prayed for an upgrade. Seems to work better for me than faxing my requests!

DH and I were up graded from standard to concierge at the WL. I had arrived ahead of DH and checked in. It was around 11pm. We were going to be there for two nights. I got to talking to the CM, telling her our trip was a surprise for my birthday and how happy I was to be there. I asked her if we could have an upper level floor and she said she had something better than that. When she told me she had upgraded us, I got tears in my eyes! I couldn't believe it. CM's like that just make it all worth it!

Oh, and it didn't cost us anything extra. I think we were paying $150/night.

I think there are so many factors involved....

On the Saturday of Thanskgivin weekend, my inlaws checked into the WL. They were booked in a standard adn upgraded to concierge. It may have been that there were rooms available there and no standard rooms...who knows?? anyway, we were happy for them because they did pay rack rate for their stay and it was just such a nice surprise for them...

I plan on asking (politely) for an "upgrade" from now on... the worst they can say is "no".
