Upgrade to AP

I'm planning our first trip to US for the end of May and have a question about upgrading multi-day tickets to annual passes.

If I buy, say, 5-day 3 park to park tickets from a ticket agent like UT or ParkSavers, will Universal know how much I paid and charge me the difference between what I paid and the price of an annual pass? Or will they give me "credit" for the full price of a 5-day 3 park ticket and have me pay the difference?

The reason I ask is I see poster talking about getting a great deal on multi day tickets but intending to upgrade to APs. If Universal will know what I paid and hit me for the difference then I might as well buy my APs at the AAA office in Atlanta and get a small ($12) discount. Or would I get credit for the full price of a multi-day ticket even though I paid less?

I am no expert on this, but I too am planning to upgrade my 5 day 3 park to park tickets to a preferred AP in June. From what I was told Universal will use their price for the 5 day tickets as the starting point, they will not use the UT price.

Based on my calculations it will cost about $106 to upgrade my 5 day 3 park to park tickets to a 3 park preferred AP. What I was told to do is figure out the 5 day ticket cost on the Universal website and compare it to the AP you are wanting to purchase.

Something to remember from what I’ve read on the Dis, once you use your tickets at VB you can not downgrade to a 2 park AP. You will have to buy a 3 park AP.

I upgraded recently using my 3 park/4 day tickets from Undercover Tourist. From what I understood from several helpful people on here, is that you need to activate your tickets first to get the full value - i.e., enter the parks using them, then go to guest services. That will activate them to the full current value. I saved quite a bit doing that as I purchased my tickets before the price increase.

Hopefully someone else will confirm this (or may be worth a call to guest services), but my understanding is that you can upgrade it at any point during your trip as long as it is within 7 days from first use. There has been talk of people waiting till the end of their trip so as not to have issues with block out dates by waiting till the end of their trip to upgrade.

You need to update tickets to a pass before the park closes on the last day you use them.


Can't go back the next day to upgrade.
