Feel like I know this answer but, if I have a 5 day ticket and decide to upgrade to an annual pass while at WDW on vacation can I still get the discounted DVC price?? $485, versus the $634?? Or can I only get the DVC price if I buy it outright (not as an upgrade). Thanks!

Happy to help! It's nice to know when someone can confirm that what you want to do actually worked!

I wonder if it must be activated at the point of purchase...thinking of the "bridging" concept, to be specific.

Yes, it does if you bought the ticket from UT or Orbitz. You would need to use the ticket first in order for it to be "bridge" to gate price and credited that amount towards an AP.

Yes -- I just did this last Thursday! I bought my regular ticket from UT, entered Epcot, and then went to guest services. The CM "bridged" my ticket to gate price, and then I upgraded to the regular AP with DVC discount. Make sure to calculate the amount you should pay beforehand so you know how much the difference in gate price and AP should be. The CM may forget to bridge the ticket first.

Did you have FP+ on your MYW ticket? Any problem when you upgraded your ticket keeping the reservations?

Yes, I had FP+ scheduled through my MYW ticket and had no problems after I upgraded to the AP. I checked MDE right after I upgraded, and it showed my new AP linked with the same FP+ reservations.
