Upgrade possible?

We booked early (like March) for our cruise near Christmas. We booked a category 5 deluxe stateroom with veranda.

I've read on this board that some people get upgrades to better staterooms. Is this even possible for us?

Possible? Yes. Probable? No.

Upgrades are few and far between, and there's no way to really give yourself a better chance of getting one. It will either happen or it won't. I always say book the category in which you'll be comfortable, because that is what you will almost certainly end up in. If you count on an upgrade, you're really just setting yourself up for disappointment.

I've been on many cruises, 11 on DCL, and have never been upgraded. That said, category 5 rooms are great, and I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

I agree with Lloyd. Upgraeds of any sort are rare and you can't control your odds.

I'd also add that, already being in a cat. 5, your odds are less simply becasue there are fewer places to upgrade you to. Cat's 1, 2 & 3 are generally always sold out on any cruise (there aren't as many and they go fast) and 4's can be pretty hard to come by, too. Most upgrades I hear about happen from say, Cat. 11 to Cat. 8 or something. One time I heard of a cat. 5 to 4 or 3 upgrade, so I'd never say it's totally impossible but I really wouldn't expect it, especially not around Christmas time.

All of the above is true. Upgrades on holiday cruises are almost non-existent as the ship usually fills.

DCL gives upgrades when they have sold out of lower categories but not sold out the ship--they upgrade people already booked in hopes of booking the cheaper cabins.
