I'm making Fish extender gifts for our upcoming cruise, and the layers will need to be laminated as one piece. Has anyone ever laminated using the Xyron? I can get a cartridge for my big one. Does the lamination work pretty much the same way as the adhesive cart?

I SURE would appreciate your good advice. I've got 100+ to do.

I have the Xyron 900, and have used the double-sided lamination with it. It works pretty good. I was concerned about bubbles and such (made a door-sign with various paper-piecings and raised letters), but didn't have any on the finished piece.

The only advice I could give is when you put in the lamination cartridge, don't immediately put in the items. No one tells you that. But lucky I had lots of scrap paper about, and kept feeding the scraps through until it straightened out and had no bubbles. It was frustrating that it did take about a foot and a half to start working right. That's a waste!

But good luck. If you have any other questions, let me know. I will try to answer, if I can.

Thank you! OF COURSE that's exactly what I would have done had you not warned me! Now, I know. I'll go Tuesday and buy the cartridge. Thank you!

Did you go out and buy the cartridge yet?

If not, I have another idea to consider.

Go see what it would cost to have the laminating done at your local FedEx Kinkos or local copy shop. My guess is it would be cheaper to have them laminate it, vs. the cost of an entire rool of the laminating stuff.

And...this is coming from someone with a 12" Xyron - who only uses it for laminating.

oooooooooh! I never thought of that! And look at all the work it would save me.

Question. If you put the roll of lamination stuff in the xyron and don't use it all, can you take it out and save for another time? Or do you have to finish it off before you can switch back to adhesive?

Yes you can take it out and save it. We do that when we go back and forth between laminate, magnetic and adhesive. I agree with PPs. Look and see what it would cost to laminate at your local office supplies stores. They would save you a lot of time since you are doing a lot of fish!

You can take out the laminate, and then replace it later. HOWEVER...maybe since I am an uncoordinated soul, I find that I waste a whole lot of laminate when I try to do this especially when you have to "get the bubbles out" of the laminate.

Laminated all 100 FE gifts in less than an hour last night - it worked GREAT!

Mischief, you were dead on the money! I wasted about 15 inches at the start of the roll getting the wrinkles /bubbles to work through. The crop girls thought it was a bad roll, but I knew to work it through, thanks to you!

I got the 50foot roll at the scrapbook store in Gloversville, NY for $30, because I was there and she had one. Then I looked at Joanns last night and they were 34.95. For this project I used about 15 feet, so there'll be plenty left for a couple more cruises worth of fe gifts.

Before cutting between my pieces, I went around each of them with an empresser/embossing tool. I do that with the adhesive pieces to keep from getting 'stringys' and thought it might help in this case, to get a good seal around the 3 layer thick pieces.

Thank you so much for all your good advice.

Great! Thanks for updating. Congrats on getting them done. And have fun on your cruise.

What is a Fish extender?

And yes, it sounds like you may have had a bad roll. I take them right back to AC Moore, the girl seems to be familiar with the "bad batches" being out there.

So, can we see what your project is now that they are finished?

Well, NO!:rotfl2:

You're on the cruise that's receiving them !

That was SNEAKY! pirate:

I'll post them AFTER the cruise!

TinkerKat, it wasn't a bad batch - just, as Mischief said, you have to waste a bit up front until it smooths out.
