I will say a prayer for Chris Kelli. It's so sad when this stuff happens to kids who have had it so rough in life. Hopefully the court system will do the right thing for him.

Thanks for all the prayers. I got a pm from a knowledgeable Diser that may help. I didn't know you may be able to hire the pd for a nominal cost if he doesn't qualify (I can't imagine why he wouldn't qualify, but this whole thing doesn't make sense). Also, he should contact his recruiter as soon as possible to let them know what's going on.

I'll keep you all posted. His court date is tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. Mountain time.

[UPDATE]

We went to court in Friday. He did qualify for a Public Defender. I have been told by three attorneys that his PD is the best criminal defense atty in the state of Colorado, so that is good news. Nothing else happened at court, his bail was not reduced, but it was not talked about at all. Basically, he took his PD application, qualified, was handed a copy of his charges, and was told he had a status conference set for December 2 at 2:00 p.m. The PD said his office would contact Chris today. Chris was going to call them this afternoon if he hadn't heard from them yet. I haven't heard if he's talked to them at all. I asked Chris if he can find any good from this, and he said he realized that many people (including Stephen and I) really care about him, and he is not alone. That's a big step for him. Please keep on praying that this will resolve quickly and he can go on with his life.

So sorry to hear about this. It's a shame this happened to him after telling the truth. I hope this doesn't affect his thinking about being honest in the future. You and your family being there for him during this time is the best thing for him. He is seeing how true friends act not like his so-called friend/roommate. Please keep us informed as his case progresses.

Chris is in my thoughts and prayers, too, tc. It's so discouraging when you're punished for doing the right thing. It does sound like he's in good hands with his attorney. I would make it crystal clear to him that Chris has no criminal record, not even a speeding ticket, has done very well in life (worked, stayed in school, etc) considering his circumstances, and intends to join the military, a lifelong goal for him. I would also ask what the possibility of speaking to the prosecutor and getting this thing dismissed (especially considering his intention to join the Service) might be.
