Conan O'Brien heads to TBS

In a surprise announcement, TBS announced today that Conan O’Brien will headline an 11 p.m. late night show for the cable network in November. His program will serve as a lead-in to TBS’ fledging Lopez Tonight, which will shift to a midnight time slot. The network said O’Brien only began talking to execs there last week, and Lopez even called O’Brien himself. “I can’t think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as a lead-in,” Lopez said in a statement. Added O’Brien, “In three months I’ve gone from network TV to Twitter to performing live in theaters and now I’m headed to basic cable. My plan is working perfectly.”

I am so glad he will be on TBS rather than fox. So now I can watch him.

I really have to wonder why he didn't go to Fox. Surely they wanted him and would have paid well. Anyone would pick network over cable...I thought so anyway. If he had went with Fox, he would have been on network AND had a half hour head start on Leno and Letterman. I'm sure Conan knows what he's doing, but I don't know the reasoning. Maybe he doesn't care for Rupert Murdoch

I'm not sure I'd call it a "choice". O'Brien's "choice" would have been to host the Tonight Show but that was a failure. He perhaps might have preferred getting a show on Fox, but Fox almost surely just wanted O'Brien's fans and following, not O'Brien himself, necessarily, and so probably insisted on terms and conditions that O'Brien couldn't stomach. As the damaged goods that he is, I think this was actually a good move for him.

But there was one truth they could not spin, one fact that no amount of buzz could overcome. And it is the sole reason why Conan O’Brien is heading to cable: His television audience isn’t big enough for a major late-night slot in broadcast television given the current economics of the daypart. And it is for that reason— and only that reason—that O’Brien will debut on TBS this fall, and not on Fox or ABC.
