Thanks to all of you who kept my sister and our family in your prayers, after my sister had a severe stroke. Just to let you all know, she is being released from the hospital this week, because there is nothing medically that can be done for her. She can not speak, eat or walk, and her right side is paralyzed. She will have to go into a nursing home, probably for the rest of her life. She is on a feeding tube, but other than that, she is on no life support. We do not know how she survived this, but apparently is was not her time to go. If she wants to fight, we will all fight with her. We are a strong family and will help in her care as much as we can. Thanks again for all your prayers. Connie

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.:grouphug:

Just curious and couldn't tell from your post, when you say "medically nothing can be done", does that include any kind of rehab? My heart goes out to you all.

Prayers lifted on behalf of your sister and you and the family.
Sadly, things like this kinda put things in somewhat of a perspective, but you'll get through it and respond with God's will.

Blessings.

Strokes are horrible. The absolute worst.

Is your sister a candidate for speech or physical therapy?

I will pray for your family.

More prayers, pixie dust and hugs for your sister and for you and your family. I will keep hoping for the best and for miracles to happen...

She should get some PT and OT and speech where ever she goes. We were hoping that they would have her go to a rehab floor before the nursing home. In a nursing home she will get some, but they certainly will not focus on that. What I meant about medically was that we are not doing or giving her anything to prolong or sustain life. (Like life support) Thanks guys. Connie

Are they looking at communication devices? Not having ability to speak is NOT the same as having nothing to say. And hand gestures are very limited, esp if you have to do them with one hand. And she'll need to learn to do stuff left-handed.

And miracles do happen.
At 43, I had a bad cerebellar stroke, which affected right-side [and I was right-handed]. Drs and PT thought I would be in wheelchair [or walker if supervised] rest of my life. Now, walk indepedently most of the time, and use a cane for stairs and long distances.

Connie -- we will continue to send good thoughts your way especially in the next few weeks when your sister, you and your family learn what the new norm will be. I especially liked your comment "If she wants to fight, we will all fight with her. We are a strong family and will help in her care as much as we can. Thanks again for all your prayers. " Being a caregiver takes a lot of strength. Please know that you have people here on the boards who care about you and will be here if you need to share your thoughts or frustrations. Hopefully your sister will be able to communicate with you even if it is not by her spoken voice. Good Luck.

Carol
It's a great day to be alive!!!

Your post has touched my heart. Although I do not personally know you, I would like to send you my love, prayers and good thoughts. Do your best. I'm sure there will be difficult times and beautiful times. Take time to care for yourself. Many of us are thinking of you. :flower3:

I would like to share that many years ago here in Sweden where I live now, I worked as a personal assistant to a young woman who also had a stroke and who was in a simular condition afterwards. When I came to work for her she was onced again able to speak although only those of us close to her could understand her. What helped a great deal however was that she had learned to sign the alphabet from a tv show that she had seen years before, I guess the show had been popular and she and her friends had practiced, they thought it was fun. So after her stroke and I imagine a bit more practice from then on she was able to spell out what she wanted to say using her good hand which made things so much easier for her. It took a while for me to learn as I had to sound out each letter but with practice it was no problem at all. I just thought maybe this is something that might be of help to your sister?
Sending good thoughts and continued prayers for your sister and family :grouphug:,
Kristina
