Well, my grandmother took a turn for the worse on Saturday...nothing that she had any control over. Before I go any further, please note that I do not have enough room here to type everything that happened, so if things are missing I appologize....and yes- there will be disciplinary steps taken, which are already in motion.....
DGM had hip surgery 3 weeks ago theres a thread on here somewhere regarding it. Anyway- she had a temporary bridge placed. Pending 6-12 weeks she'd have it taken out and the actual replacement hip put in. Everything was going well, and on Thursday she was transfered to a rehab center that is part of this MAJOR hospital, in a a town closer to us. The hospital is one of the largest teaching hospitals anywhere, and is state of the art etc... the rehab is located in a smaller hospital, owned/operated by this one.
Bad hip is left side....Saturday she asked for the bed pan, though she is suppose to transfer to wheel chair/toilet/wheelchair/bed, when she needs to use the bathroom....she had company and asked for the pan as it takes about 1/2 hour-40 minutes for her to complete a bathroom transfer....LNA/CNA's were acting "put out" by the fact they'd have to roll her for the bed pan...she has no use of her left leg- no hip etc...she is rolled onto her right side NORMALLY.......they rolled her on the left side, and the wedge between her legs came out- they did not support the legs to keep them in a wedge as they rolled her...the right leg dropped onto the left leg, her left hip was DISLOCATED during this move...she SCREAMED! Probably people in CT could here her, and she was in NH.!!!....
All night she complained of SEVERE hip pain...worse than she has ever had...EVER...even delivering a 12lb baby with no pain meds YEARS ago was a walk in the park according to her compared to this pain!...
FINALLY Sunday morning after many more complaints by her and us, they x-rayed...yup- dislocated the hip bridge that was installed with cement...
Long story short- she's having surgery on THrusday to replace this bridge with the actual hip that was suppose to wait for 4-6 more weeks...she take cumadin as a rule, and they want to wait till thursday for her system to rid itself of that blood thiner...she also has to take some preventative meds, and is now on an IV/Antibiotic drip, as her wound is still not clear...
We're leaving for florida on Friday morning at 3am, I may not see her after surgery, due to the time they may get her in, it's a 6 hour surgery for her...so depending.....I'm taking the DD's up Wednesday after school to see her, but regardless of the time, they can't go in PACU or ICU after surgery...
The NH Board of Nursing is investigating the 2 LNA's, and my grandmother along with all of us were contacted by them, the Director of Nursing at this rehab, and the patient liason....I told the Director of Nursing that my DGM wants to return to that rehab center, as it's one of the best however, NO LNA's are to be part of her care, and if the RN's are not skilled in orthopedic issue's, they are not as well...her Therapy team agrees with us, and they were the ones who urged us to press this issue.
Her surgeon has stated that it is VERY unlikely that a normal roll for a bedpan would have caused the severe dislocation of this bridge, and he asked us if we contacted the proper licensure boards..which we have.
Prayer's and pixie please!!!
