Today DS19 had his court appearance for speeding 25+mph in a school zone. Although the judge could have thrown the book at him, even put him in jail(!) she showed mercy. She allowed him to keep his license pending his completion of defensive driving school and 24hrs community service, plus a $200 fine. He is very relieved and is already working on finding the community service venue.

I had hoped the judge would be a little tougher, but she made her point. DS returned home a humbled young man. I'm glad she did not suspend his license, although she could have. I rely on John to run errands and take his siblings places. He also drives himself to two jobs and to college classes, so his not having a license would have made a huge impact on me. I know, purely selfish reasons.

John is a good kid. He's never had a run-in with the law, he's kind to his brother & sister, doesn't use drugs, and kisses his grandma. He just needs to get his testosterone under control now and get on with it.

We had a friend who had several boys (good kids). I remember one time he was discussing what dumb thing one of them had just done. He said, "You know, he's just a big old stupid boy sometimes..." (It was said with love, honest! :rotfl: )

i got caught speeding once when I was 17.
in a school zone...the ticket was like $120 I believe.

My mom, who worked for the police department as a school crossing guard, was TICKED. My parents took away my car for 2 weeks, and made me walk to/from school. (2 miles each way...not a huge deal, as I did it before I had a license anyway.) I gave my parents the money for the ticket, and they paid it for me.

one day, the cop who gave me the ticket drove by my mom's house, and saw my car parked in the back yard during the school day. He stops in, asked what happened...she tells him how I was being punished. (loss of car for 2 weeks)

The cop was impressed, felt bad, and ripped up the ticket. (so it never went on my record.)

do you think my parents ever told me? nope. They kept the $120 I gave them and still made me walk to school for 2 weeks. hehehe

I didnt' find out about this until I was 22 years old. heheheh

thanks mom!

You were raised right. :rotfl:

We did take away John's extra driving privileges since November: driving to see his girlfriend, going up to Blockbuster, the mall, church, the movies. It's downright pitiful to see a 19yo man beg for a ride in the mini-van:rotfl2: We are making him pay the fine, do the time, and pay the increase on our insurance rate. As of today he can drive again, but only with Dad's permission(no just taking the car for his pleasure.) Life's tough.

Thank you!! My mom would be happy to hear that! (I agree with what they did personally...makes a kid realize the driving IS a privilege...not a right)

that was also the stipulation in my house growing up - if we got into an accident/got another speeding ticket - we'd pay the increase on the policy.

ITA with what you are doing though. At various stages of my life, my parents would "disable" my car privelages...but then they HATED driving me to and from work...so I got the car back just for school/work.

but then they figured out that I only went to school/work...hehehe.

Sometimes they have to learn their lessons the hard way. Glad it worked out OK for him. Just enough "discomfort" to make an impression.
