Update on DH

Well, things are up in the air with DH. We were at the dr office until almost 1 (stupid 1+ hour waits) and have a plan in action but don't have any answers yet. No surprise.

What we do know is that DH *wasn't* getting the normal checkups he should have been getting. It's been a few years since his last bloodwork apparently, and 10 years or more since his last full physical (whatever that is vs a typical heart/lung/weight/CBC physical). His blood pressure has been consistently high ever since he's been going to this office, and this dr (a new one for DH) was very unhappy to see that nothing had been done about it. Apparently it's high enough to be in the heart attack / stroke risk already (he's only 30. :/ ) So, at a minimum, he's now on blood pressure meds.

As for the incidents he's been having, there are two possible culprits. One is sugar, but this guy didn't sound too convinced that was the problem. He thinks that would have been found earlier.

The other is either micro-seizures or micro-strokes. Neither of which I'd ever considered until yesterday and what some of y'all said. Typical "this happens to old people, not people in their 30s" syndrome, even for me. The impression I got from the dr is he's expecting the bloodwork to come back clean and that we'll be sending DH in for some EEGs next to do brainwave readings, probably for an extended period (ie: overnight). Unfortunately, in hindsight, I'm leaning with the dr on this one. Sugar may be playing a factor, but I'm afraid that's not going to be what we find.

So really, I don't know where things stand. But at least he's getting testing now, and I like this doctor's aggressive approach.

We'll be going back in next week.

Thank you for the update! Hope you get some answers REAL soon!!!

Tammi, thanks for the update! My grandmother had a mini-stroke (as they called it) and she was in the room with a woman who was (I'd guess) about 35-40 who had one as well. Everyone was in shock about it for her. So even though it "happens to old people" that kind of thing can happen to younger ones as well.

At least this is getting checked... my thoughts and prayers are with you all

Tammi, I hope he gets the help he needs. :grouphug:

My bp was scary enough they told me to see a doctor that day or end up at the er. I'm home for a week because of that and some other problems.
We have to take better care of ourselves.

Thanks Elaine, Serena.

Yeah, I know it can happen in any age, it's just still a shock and not something you think of first, ya know? :( But thanks to the DIS, I was prepared for that kind of diagnosis.

Tammi ~ I am glad to at least hear this doctor is being aggressive about this. Many hugs to you and your DH.

Tammi, I hope they find out what's causing the problems. :goodvibes :goodvibes Take care. :sunny:

praying. They will figure it all out soon, ok :)

OK, don't know how I missed that thread yesterday. Just read it now. I'll keep you both in my thoughts. What is it with some men & not wanting to go to doctors?

I don't know, but boy did he get in trouble when he was busted for lying about that appointment.

I hope they figure out what is wrong with your dh soon! :grouphug: When I read your post yesterday mini strokes is what came to my mind from what you described. Here is some pixie dust for you and your dh pixiedust:

Glad you are starting to get some answers. I didn't reply to your post yesterday but I read it and thought seizures. In any case it is all terribly scary.

Hopefully this will be a wake up call that he needs to keep his appointment and not lie to you about them. It is a shame most men don't see the need to take care of themselves until it is too late. My DH included.

I'm afraid though that he's still going to try to hide his head on this one.

But yeah, in hindsight with things that have been happening with him for the past 6 years or so (I don't know about before that, as though we were dating, I didn't have as much time with him), something neurological (seizures or strokes) fits better than sugar problems.

Why can't foresight be as clear as hindsight?

Rajah, Glad he's getting a thorough check-up! Prayers that he will be okay. He is lucky to have you to worry about him! :goodvibes

TC :cool1:

Tammi, did I miss an update? Just wondering how your hubby's doing.

Nothing since Wed. We're waiting on the bloodwork results, and unless it's something "urgent", they're going to wait to give those back to us at the appointment on Wed. He's doing very well the past two days, though.

Also, just found your post. Glad you "dragged" your DH into the Doctor's office. Sounds like my FIL. Anyway, I assume he has been taking his blood pressure medicine? I have to say when I first read your other post and the symptoms your DH was having - the first thing that went through my mind was a TIA tranient ischemic attack or what you called a "mini-stroke" (I am also an RN). The risk factors associated with heart attack are the same risk factors for a TIA or a full blown stroke, so if he has been having high blood pressure for some time, he certianly is at risk for a heart attack or "brain attack". Here is a link for more information on TIAs just for your FYI http://http://www.strokeassociation.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4781

Because of the difficulty you had getting him to the Dr's this time, you will probably need to do something similiar for any follow-up appts. Regardless of how good he is feeling, he needs to go to those follow-up appts. Did the Dr say anything about doing a MRI or CAT scan of his head?? Just curious.

Anyway - good luck.
