Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but due to construction on the Woodrow Wilson Bidge Project on I-95 north through Washington DC. Expect Major Delays for this weekend Starting Friday night 7/15 through Monday morning 7/18. They will be closing all north bound lanes except for 1. They are estimating the delays can be more then 90 minutes. They are sugesting to go around on I-495 towards Rockville MD and pick up I-95 north that way. Good luck folks...

Update: Just recieved more info. The exit ramp on I95 that puts you on the DC beltway I95/495 (Outer Loop) towards the Woodrow Wilson bridge will be closed all together starting 8PM Friday Night 7/15 until 5 AM Monday 7/18. They are telling folks to go I395 through town or get on the inner loop of 495 and cross the American Legion Bridge and pick up I-95 north in Maryland.
Have fun folks! I'm heading south on Thursday so I get to miss all the fun... :cool1:

I read this article in today's Richmond newspaper and was just coming to post something.

Drivers heading north are being urged to take US 301 across the Potomac River, which would avoid the DC areal completely.

The best way, driving north from Richmond, would be to take I-95 exit 104 toward Bowling Green and pick up US 301 there.

I saw this on the Theme Parks Board too. Thankfully our plans are to drive through Friday morning (before rush hours) already!

Seems like they have been building this bridge forever-.
I guess this delay can't be helped, but OH what a mess it will be!!
Those "alternate" routes are traffic nightmares in their own right on a normal day.

Be aware that the Route 1 Interchange(Virginia side, right before the WW bridge) will be screwed up as well, so coming north on Route 1 & expecting to get onto the Beltway at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge is really not a viable option.
There are two basic options that might work...
Using routes that connect up with the western side of the Beltway. There are a variety of ways that this could be done, but if you can avoid coming through the Springfield I-95/495/395 interchange, do so! Look at your map & figure out some different ways to do this.
Use the "US301" route, travelling east of the metro area. Coming north, get on US301 south of the DC metro area & make your 'River Crossing' using that, going up east of DC.
If you *must* come through the DC area this weekend, listen to area radio stations, AM630(WMAL, talk & news) and AM1500(WTOP, news) are usually what I listen to. They will have updates throughout the weekend & also will usually have travelling options that are viable.

good luck with anyone who *has* to be out on the DC highways this weekend!
agnes!

I'm glad I saw this! I just made plans to visit my sister in Fredricksburg, this weekend. DD and I leave on Friday and planned to head home, either Sunday or Monday. Looks like my decision is made!

I try to avoid 301through Waldorf on weekends all together.... just as bad as the beltway.

Be patient and may the pixie dust be with those traveling around DC this weekend

Thank you for all the info in this thread. Very helpful for friends coming north this weekend ...
