Update in 1st post. Tip added without permission - what would you do?

If you have a dispute with the quality of the services or goods, then you should make a good faith effort to contact the merchant first. But if it looks like a billing error or is a totally bogus charge, you may deal with the bank or credit card company first.

Yes, but if it clears as a bogus charge, the merchant should be immediately informed that he has an employee who is doing this too, though.

This past summer when I still lived in LA, I went to a take out sandwich shop. I was given a price and my change was dropped in the tip jar! I asked for the manager, told her what happen. And that I wanted my money back & cancel my order now! I found this to be very rude.

That was straight up theft:mad: I can not believe that someone would have the nerve to pull that stunt either.

I had this happen once and it cleared for the higher amount. It was actually the owner of the establishment that did it! I called my bank and they refunded my money, then I contacted the BBB. The place ended up going out of business not long after that. I'm sure it's because they lost alot of customers by being crooks.

Sure they do, think "hotels"

NO they can't, if you've signed a charge slip for one amount NO ONE can change the amount and make it higher after you have signed it.

And I've never had a hotel charge me a different price then what I booked at.

If you have damaged the hotel room than they can charge your card for that damage as they do not find that until housekeeping goes in. They can't cahnge the room rate though.

We had this happen at a little local restaurant we used to go to almost every week. They would just throw an extra .48 cents one time, .33 cents another, .65 another...never more than a dollar.

Honestly, it wasn't worth pursuing it with the bank....but it was an interesting pattern. I'm betting they did this with everyone and raked in small change that added up over time..

We had one added once, but it was actually after we saw the original bill and before they brought out the credit card slip that you sign. We wouldn't have caught it except I saw the original. When they brought back the one that we sign, DH got it and asked me how much to put on the card. When I told him and mentioned that it would make it ~xx%, he looked at me kind of funny. I asked him what was wrong and he said that my calculation was wrong. When he showed me the total line before the tip line, it was totally different than the original bill that had disappeared before the little folder was brought back. Server was trying to make himself double in tips.

Thanks for the update. Glad it turned out to be nothing.

:)

Ah yes, that makes sense. And I wouldn't think of that as it's never happened to me. :) Thanks for clarifying.
