 Hang in there! I'm sorry your kids aren't feeling well, I hope they are well soon.

I hear ya! I'm home from work with DD11 today, will have to stay home tomorrow, too. Took her to urgent care for the 3rd time in a month (all different reasons). Today she has a fever, chills, sore throat, nasal congestion, but only a slight cough. Dr. says her lungs are clear, so no h1n1 - won't even swab for it. I don't beleive it. No Tamiflu for us. We leave in 16 days.

Hope you are all better soon and have a safe and HEALTHY trip! :wizard:

Ugh, ain't it fun? To the previous poster, I can't believe they won't even swab for it...especially when you are going on vacation that soon! Crazy! My son just got over it and he's had it TWICE!! They say he probably didn't build up enough antibodies the first time because he had it so mild. Who knows. Other DS has hives all over his whole body and they put him on a steroid. The pharmacist told us that it would knock down his immune system and make him more susceptible to H1N1. Well, forget that!! We're letting him take it today as it seems to be wiping the hives out pretty quickly but then trying Dr. Weil's suggestion of Stinging Nettle. He'll have to be off the steroids for 4 days before he can get the H1N1 vaccine if we even get it in our area. Gheesch. Always something! This year more than usual!

The swab isn't that accurate at detecting the flu anyway and it really hurts so it's probably for the better that they didn't swab. Whatever it is should be goine in 16 days.
DD has the flu and her doctor (Army hosp.) won't perscribe tamiflu unless she has other high risk conditions.

From what I've been told the swab is pretty miserable. Looks like you'll have plenty of time to get healthy if you still have 21 days until your trip. Better to get it at home then while away--hope everyone's feeling better soon.

The swab is nothing - they just swab the inside of the nose gently. My kids have been swabbed many times. It's definitely better than a strep test.

It is also not 100% accurate. My DD had the H1N1 2 weeks ago - high fever, cough, vomiting and diahrrea (that is the difference with H1N1), ended up on steroids for the cough. I didn't even ask them to swab her - she had been sick for over 4 days already when I brought her in just for the lingering cough. Tamiflu wouldn't have helped, as it's used within 24 to 48 hours of symptoms usually. She clearly had H1N1, but what is the point of wasting the swab when you already know what it is? If she was having other problems, like the fever didn't go down, then maybe I would. They did test for strep to make sure it wasn't bacterial.

Tamilfu will not prevent the flu. My mom has a friend who was caring for her grandchildren (whose mom is a doctor) so the friend took Tamiflu thinking it would prevent the flu. It won't! I was so surprised that her daughter would get it for her, and she'd take it! How nuts is that?!

If you're going on vacation in 3 weeks, you should be fine. We decided not to travel this winter, as my kids have already missed school due to illness, and there is so much going around. Wash hands!!!!

Lots of confirmed H1N1 cases where we are have not included vomiting and diarrhea--I know that is more common with H1N1 than with regular seasonal flu, but at least where we are they are saying that you don't need those additional symptoms for it to be swine flu.
