UPDATE: Cancelling Reservations due to the worst thing possible

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I hope to be reunited with my deceased loved ones after my own death, and I hope you, too, will be reunited with loved ones you have lost, such as your partner.

...Ideally, they would not put the points in "holding," allow you to bank the 07 UY points (after your banking deadline) and return your 08 UY poitns to to the 08 UY.

Best of luck -- Suzanne
This is what I would ask Disney to do, too -- put all your points from this reservation into your 2008 use year without the holding account restriction. If they aren't willing to do this, ask if they will at least return the 2008 points to the 2008 use year, preferably with no holding account restriction. Making a reservation with your points during your 2007 use year and renting the reservation here (when you are within 30 days of check-in) might be your best option if Disney won't be flexible, but given the tragic circumstances, I'd expect them to bend the rules for you.

....Also, both of our names are on the contracts as purchasers. Has anyone here had to deal with what happens when one of the purchasers on the contract passes away?....
I own a bunch of timeshares, so I've given some thought to this. It will depend on the type of deed you have, and rules do vary from state to state. Does your deed say "joint owners with right of survivorship"? If so, you will probably automatically get full ownership, without worrying about probate or a will. (I'm not a lawyer, though, so take this with a grain of salt!) A timeshare closing company or any Florida title/closing company could probably advise you on this; I've used http://www.timesharetransfer.com in the past and have been happy with them.

Dear Steve,

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. When you lose someone so unexpectedly many share in your sorrow. :sad1: May happy memories give you strength at this difficult time.

With my deepest sympathy,

I have no answers on your DVC questions but I am sorry for your loss. I believe we will all be reunited with our loved ones.

So sorry to hear about your loss.

I had to cancel a reservation for my mom and I when she died. It was more than 30 days out (about 45-50) but past my 100% banking deadline. They let me bank all the points even though it was past the deadline.

Steve, so sorry to hear about your loss.

I'm venturing into new territory here, and need to ask a question of other DVC members who may have experienced a similar unfortunate circumstance.

Steve,

I have experienced a similar (but different) situation... and just reading your post is stirring up very deep emotions.

In June of 1995, my 19 yo son was killed in a plane crash. We were due to go on a vacation to WDW in July. I can't even begin describe the pain one goes through when losing a child... nor would I want anyone to really know. Trust me that I know how emotionally distraught you are right now. I am so sorry.

I cannot explain why... but like you, I wondered about my DVC points. I think it can only be related to trying to do something normal... self preservation to keep some level of sanity throughout the trauma... truly an open wound to the soul.

In my case... we were just outside of the 30 day window... and when I called MS to cancel my reservation... they did tell me that even if I called a few days later (inside of the 30 day window)... that they would still take care of my request. The advice from others here is good... to call MS. I would also ask that they make an exception and bank the points.

Stay strong, and know that there are others who have you in their hearts right now.

/Jim

I don't have any advice but I just wanted to say I'm so so sorry :( Hugs to you and I hope everything works out with Disney.

Hugs and prayers for your loss.

I am hoping MS can help you out as PPs have mentioned.

Once again, I must sing the praises of DVC and can affirm my investment with them because they really came through for me.

I contacted MS this morning, and they were amazing. MY DVC MS representative allowed me to cancel the reservation, put the borrowed points back into the Aug 08 UY, and even offered to bank the Aug 07 UY points into the Aug 08 UY so I didn't lose any points. Of course, this is a one-time exception and I hope to God I never have to do this kind of transaction again.

Thanks to all my DIS friends for your kind words of support during this difficult time.

Hooray for DVC and them understanding. We all knew that this outcome would either turn out good or bad (really no middle) and I know that all of us DVC owners and lovers were really hoping that they'd do the "right" thing and it sounds like they did.

Take care of yourself and know that we're all with you!

Thanks for the update Steve, and again, so sorry to hear of the pain you must endure. Glad DVC could make it a little more tolerable for you by making 1 less thing you had to worry about.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Thankfully DVC pulled through, so it's one less thing for you to have to worry about.

Our thoughts are with you.

I just wanted to express my sympathies on the loss of your partner.

I'm glad DVC was able to help at this difficult time.

I'm so sorry for your loss  I'm so glad that MS came thru and that you don't have to deal with this during such a difficult time in your life.

I am so glad DVC was able to help!

I am so sorry it had to happen to you!

Adding my sympathies for your loss.

Steve, please know that we are so sorry for your loss and you are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
I would contact MS to see what can be done for you. I can't imagine that there isn't something written about extenuating circumstances.
