Congratulations to Disney--"Up" was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar this morning. (It was also nominated for the animated feature Oscar.) I think this is only the second time an animated film has been nominated for Best Picture. Hurray for "Up"!!!

I actually liked 'UP' better than Avatar :thumbsup2

I'm glad it got nominated but it would not be there if it weren't for the allowance of 10 movies to be nomiated for best picture.

Beauty and the Beast is the only other animated film to be nominated for best picture.

I'm surprised to see District 9 in the list. Of course it wouldn't be there without the expanded list either.

Of course, Avatar will win.

Yep. I mean District 9? Come on.

Then again I am still boiling over last yrs Oscars with the "In Memorium" for leaving out Harvey Korman and George Carlin. I lost a lot of respect for the Academy last yr. Still not over it.:rolleyes1

Interesting. Up was just okay to me. As far as Pixar movies go, I'd count it as one of the lesser films :confused3.

I'm not sure I believe "UP" should be nominated for best picture, but I did REALLY like it. I like it so much more than "Cars", "The Incredibles" and "Meet the Robinsons". The only Pixar movie I like better than "Up" is "Finding Nemo".

I agree.

I believe the extended list is a bonus to the movies themselves. Whether they win or not the nod equals dollars.

I spend the first 2 months of the year watching all the nominated movies and usually miss ONE. THAT is always the one that wins!!:lmao: Last year the only one I missed was Slumdog Millionaire... who knew! :confused3

So far the only ones I've seen is Avatar and District 9. I'm going to skip Precious and Blindside so they just may be lucky this year! :thumbsup2

And one of the reasons we have 10 best picture nominations was because WALL*E was snubbed last year. That and The Dark Knight being left out were mentioned as reasons why the list was expanded when they made the announcement last year.

UP was being talked as the Pixar film to finally get some Oscar attention outside of the Best Animated Category before they expanded the list, although even then it was a long shot at best.

And it deserved it - it's easily one of the best films of 2009. Even if it doesn't win Best Picture (which it won't) it will most likely win Best Animated and hopefully Best Score.

I was disappointed Star Trek was left out of the Best Picture list, but the UP and District 9 nominations more than made up for it. D9 was one of the best sci-movies I've seen in a long time.

I'm thinking Avatar is going to win Best Picture, but Kathryn Bigelow will win Best Director of The Hurt Locker - and the cool part about that is that she would be the first woman to win a Best Director Oscar. And she deserves it, The Hurt Locker was amazing. :thumbsup2

I was thrilled to see District 9 nominated. Yes, I know it wouldnt' have made the list if it was only 5, but it fully deserves to be there!

Agreed! I would have loved to see Sharlto Copley get a nomination as well, but the Best Picture recognition is pretty cool. :thumbsup2

Me too :)

I am so happy for UP I just can't stand it. I was yelling this morning until my husband said to sush it, missy! :rotfl:

I think I am one of the few who didn't like District 9. I felt the story was a little too projected and the artistry of the filming kept pulling me out of the story.

I am disappointed that there is a hitch with the best sound editing vs. sound mixing category. It seems that Transformers bumped UP from Sound Mixing. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO on you, academy voters!

I'm not sure I like the expanded list. It makes it seem like half of it is just bonus advertising or pity nods and it seems like they have no chance but are there just cause. That or I'm just old and set in my ways.

Anyways District 9 was amazing. I didn't know what to expect going into that and I can't remember hating a character so much at the beginning of a film and having it turn around. I'm looking forward to a sequel on that one.

I haven't seen any movies this year, it seems. Other than Up.

That movie made DH and I burst into tears for a solid 15 minutes. And then the stuff with Russell and his dad made us cry more. And the movie made us laugh and smile, and think about life and death and what come in between, and love and everything.

Stinkin' good movie.

And all that withOUT totally realistic looking human characters. How can that square-face Carl make me so sad?

Then again, the fact that Russell looks JUST like my husband did when he was a kid made an impression. :)

Oh, and Pete Docter deserves an award for the Kevin sound he made as Kevin calls to the babies. (I would say "she" but DH reminded me that maybe with that animal, babies are cared for by their fathers, so I'm not totally convinced that Kevin is indeed a girl!)

It is only returning things to how they are supposed to be. Best Picture always had ten nominations until 1943.

I'm thrilled for Up to get a nomination! I thought it really showed the range of human emotions and had a depth beyond what you usually see in movies (and even more so in animated ones) these days.
