I'm just curious if anyone has ever heard of an unwanted gift exchange? DH and I got a bunch of gifts that were not on our registries and they are things we just don't need.

It seems like there should be a place you could exchange unwanted things for things you want or need.

Anyone looking for a smoothie maker??? lol

This happened to us too! We got some things that were just NOT our taste, not even sort of. I felt so awful because someone took the time to pick them out for us. We actually knew where the gifts were from, took them to the store and explained they were shower gifts and weren't our style and then exchanged them for something we liked. That way, the person still got us a 'present.' Is that horrible???????

Neither place we went needed a receipt. The one gave us cash back, which we bought something else gifty with, and the other place gave us store credit, which we used to buy a new gift.

Wow, that's interesting. I can't believe someone would send a present that the couple hasn't registered for. I mean, not to be rude, but a couple doesn't register just for fun. I understand that maybe they are trying to be original, but if it was something you wanted, wouldn't you have asked for it?

Lots of people have an anti-registry stance! My mother and many of her friends hate the registry idea. I had a shower given by one of her friends with about 35 people. I think only 6 or 7 of them gave us stuff off of the registry!

My biggest issue is that I'm 34 years old and even though I had never been married before I have tons of stuff! In fact, DH lived alone as well so we have double a lot of stuff! I registered for nice new stuff like dishes, silverware, and cookware. Still people gave us all kinds of stuff that was not on our registry and I don't know what to do with it!! I have about a dozen items that I have no gift receipt for or any idea where it came from.

I'm over run with crystal serving dishes!!!!

I guess I'm in the minority. I think it's perfectly fine for guests to give gifts that aren't on the registry. Some people would feel like they're putting in more of an effort to find something with some personal significance (perhaps not a smoothie maker, though, unless there's some inside joke there :) ). Some of the most memorable gifts my mom got weren't on her registry. Like a little crystal candy dish that always makes her think of the giver. And in the past, I've bought close friends gifts from places like Tiffany's, knowing they would never want to look "snooty" by registering there. I'm actually looking forward to "surprise" gifts that aren't on my registry, even if they're not things I would choose for myself.

I'm not completely against it. I did get some things I really like that I didn't register for. Especially from people who know I'm a Disney fanatic!!!
I guess it's weird to me that we got random gifts from people we don't really know (friends of my parents or his) that were things we don't need.

I know that there is a trading thread on the budget board, why not check and see if you could have a trading thread on this board? That way, maybe you have something that you didn't register for, but someone on this board may have.. and they may have something that you need. I think it would be neat.

You don't need a smoothie makeer? :rotfl: I loved my Mickey one before it broke.

I love the idea too!!

We can totally get this going right now if you want :) Let's start a new thread and we can keep a log of all the items up for swap on the first post.

Done! Take a look and let me know if we should add any other rules.

I have done alot of trades on the trade thread and i think it is just stated that Disboards will not get involved in a trade. It's between the two parties to come to a agreement

I agree with Amber. We are in the same boat. I have lived alone for a long time and DF was married not all that long ago...we are still opening the packaging of some of his gifts!! So, we are chuckling trying to figure out what to even register for. We don't need flatware or cookware or even drinking glasses, etc.

And, we just bought a smoothie maker this past April for our trip down to WDW!!! Darn!

I am scared about some of the stuff we may receive. But, I never give a gift that's not on a registry unless its cash or a gift card!!

I love the idea of starting a trade thread. Thanks Karen for doing that!
