Okay, just really need to vent....

I just got off the phone from my hair salon---

I "had" a wonderful stylist there who I've been going to every month for over 2.5 years spending over $150 each visit and we had become friends---when I ask what they were phoning me about the girl says "did you have an appointment with XXXXXX soon?" so I replied that no I was just there last Friday and my next appt. is July 8th.

The girl says "oh XXXXXX isn't doing hair here anymore she's gone into sales." WTH?!

I was just there last Friday with my 2 youngest, we spent almost $300, talked with her about what she could do for my next appointment and set up my next 2 months appointments with my stylist standing right beside me and she never said a word!!

To me this is beyond unprofessional and totally inconsiderate plus I am disappointed qs she never emailed, phoned, nothing...I honestly am so mad I could spit!
Thanks for letting me vent....:mad::mad::mad:

It's soooo hard finding a stylist that "knows" your style and what you like.....

That happened to me many years ago. I found out later that the stylist was fired for drug abuse. :scared1: So you may not be getting the full story. (And I did eventually find someone I liked better!)

How friendly were you with her?

I have been going to my stylist for over 2 years and she does my mom and dads hair too and always asks how they are since i go more often they do, but I would never expect her to call or email me and let me kow that she was leaving. I also wouldn't have expected her to tell me that she might be thinking about leaving. She also may have not even known at that point which is why she talked about your next appt. I know it can be hard to find a good stylist, but I don't that I would get all mad and upset if he/she left for another job opportunity.

I understand you are mad. It's so hard to find a stylist that you click with who is good. But, it could be that your stylist was let go or left on the spur of the moment? If the salon is calling all of her clients, I'm inclined to believe that for whatever reason, she didn't know she'd be leaving the salon when she saw you for your appt. last week.

ETA: Also, if she did know she was leaving, she may not have been allowed to tell any of her clients per the salon's rule. Sometimes they don't want salon business leaving with the stylists.

When you say you are friends, do you mean that you get together outside of the salon? Do you normally chat on the phone with one another? I know it's frustrating, but there is probably a reason she didn't say anything to you last week. Maybe she hadn't been offered the job at that point and didn't know for sure if she would be changing jobs, or maybe she was let go from that salon. As for contacting you, it sounds like that's exactly what was happening when you received the phone call, although it sounds like you would have preferred that she call you personally.

Many years back something similar happened to me. It turned out that the stylist quit and could not tell her clients she moved, due to a contractural agreement she had with the salon. I "found" her later with the help of a phone call from an anonymous person.;)

I disagree that it was unprofessional and inconsiderate, and I think the amount that you pay her is irrelevant. Perhaps she had not yet notified her employer, perhaps she did not have an offer yet on Friday. Since you don't have the details, you really can't speculate.

I am sorry you're going to have to look for a new stylist. When I find one I like, I stick with them as long as possible!

I've had a couple of stylists "leave" for one reason or another. One stylist decided not to come back to work after her scheduled maternity leave. I had an appointment scheduled with her shortly after her expected return. I didn't get a personal call and we were friendly (she'd been to my house), but I got a letter from her (or it could have been a form letter, but it was signed by her) explaining that she wouldn't be returning and recommending a different stylist at the same salon. The salon also included a coupon for money off my next visit. I was happy with the way the salon handled it, although I was disappointed I need to find another stylist!

Another time, my stylist left to go to another salon. Apparently, she was forbidden to tell any of her clients she was leaving because the salon considered us "the salon's" clients, not her personal clients. We had a mutual friend who told me what happened, and I ended up following her to her new salon (although I eventually stopped going there because her new hours and location were not convenient for me.) But, at any rate, if I had not had a mutual acquaintance, I think she would have just "disappeared."

I agree that, for customers, it stinks... But I think it's common. I'd bet she was forbidden from telling you about the change.

DisneyBamaFan: LOL :lmao: Definately don't need a new style as color and cut gets changed monthly...that's why I went so often!

clutter: I really don't think it would be anything related to being fired or let go as she is a truly a great person, the salon's top stylist and the owner adored her.

As for friends, yes, we do talk/facebook/email several times between appts. and I was taking her daughter and a friend to my daughter's b-day as a favor for her but we don't "get together" to hang out as I live in a different city...I understand it may be hard to tell me to my face but at least send an email! We do that anyways so it wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary....

Just not impressed.......

When I got a similar phone call once I emailed my stylist (I had her email because she had asked me to send her a link to a website once and I found it in sent mail--so we were not close like you are) because I was worried about her. Sure enough, she had been let go very unexpectedly and was told she could not legally contact her clients. She was pretty shocked and hurt--I do not know (did not pry) the full story of what happened but she was accused (she says falsely) of violating her client's confidentiality in some way. She was a great stylist and always nice and professional when I went to her so i have no idea. Anyway, even when she was not my friend my first impulse was concern not anger--perhaps you can send an email and ask your friend/stylist what happened and is everything okay?

I know that the owner of the salon I go to had a problem with a stylist that left. She went into the salon's computer and took all the clients info and sent them letters from her new salon. The owner was lived and considered calling the police on the former employee. I wouldn't be so hard on the girl until you hear the whole story.

Oh my its sooo hard to find good stylists. It took me 3yrs to find the one who does my hair now. And I cannot tell you how happy I was when she called me after leaving her original salon. Not sure how she stole my number without anyone knowing but when she called me i switched right over to her new salon where she's a co-owner now. My old salon sent me a letter with a coupon but I didn't go back.

I'm sorry that with so many ways to get in touch that your stylist did not. That truly was unprofessional.

OP,
I do understand your frustration, but don't you think it IS professinal and considerate that the salon at least contacted you BEFORE you got there for your appointment and saw that she no longer worked there?

That would be unprofessional if they didn't do that.

I worked 10 years for a great company but left because I was not being paid enough money and was done literally begging on my hands and knees. I was offered double my salary. In my contract I was to give 2 weeks notice which I did and wanted that 2 weeks to at least let my customers know that I was leaving. However, I was told that I did not have to come back, except for my exit interview.

My customers were so upset with me, but I had to follow the procedure which could have been the same with your stylist. I could have been taken to court if I contacted anyone, even by my own private phone or email. It was just how the contract read.

Good Luck finding a new stylist and maybe she will contact you when she can or maybe you could reach out to her?

This is what I was thinking as well. Ask around, you may find her.

Sounds perfectly professional to me.

She left the salon.

As the salon's customer, the salon contacted you to let you know the stylist was no longer there.

As other's have mentioned, there are numerous reasons she didn't tell you during her last appt, most likely contractual issues.

IF you are such good friend with her, why not send her an "OMG" e-mail.

Hey Stylist,

Oh my goodness, I just got a call from the salon. They said you weren't there anymore. What the heck happened?

Signed Mad Friend

Either she will answer you and you will have your answers or you have assumed more of a friendship than is really there.

I worked as a receptionist at a hair salon while in high school and college. While there were three "core" stylists at this salon, there were many others who cycled through over the years. Usually, when a stylist was leaving they would let their own clients know... discreetly. When we would have a stylist leave we were told that if a client asked where the stylist went, we were not to give out that info... even though usually we knew which salon they landed at. I always played by the owner's rules.... except for the girls who called at prom time, hysterically crying because a stylist who was going to do their updos left (she had a conflict with the owner and was essentially fired for personal reasons). I called the stylist and gave her the names and phone numbers of those girls so that they could have her do their hair for their proms.

SO, maybe you are just being told that your stylist left to go into "sales". I find the story fishy, especially if you were just there and she didn't tell you she was thinking about changing careers. I bet if you call around, you might find her at another salon. Or, bribe the receptionist!

I've lost many stylists this way, and none have contacted me. I believe that it's in their contract with the salon, so don't be so hard on her.

To make a long story short I left a job after the boss worried about her job because she didn't do it and the boss's were finding out. She made my job unbearable so I left. She told all my clients that I left in a hurry because I was really depressed about my mum. I met up with one of them at the store and they told me and were really worried. I tried to clear it up but she had done such a good job of it I had to let it go. Any of the other clients that I have seen have stayed away from me.
