Unofficial Guide theory for lack of FD

This has probably been touched on somewhere else, but I can't seem to find a discussion of this sort. I was reading through my Unofficial Guide 2010 last night and came across the section where it points out that the cost of dining has risen dramatically recently because that's a place where Disney can increase flagging profits during tough economic times. I'm wondering if anybody's floated this as a possible reason FD might be excluded as a booking incentive.

I myself hardly know what's what; I just thought it might be worth discussing. (We don't even book free dining cause we're just a couple, no kids, and we go deluxe. We've only used room discounts.)

You might be correct!

I disagree - there's been plenty of FD offers for the spring and summer. DVR holders still have FD for kids - previous kids offers were stay/play, no dining. PINs for QSD have been going out still.

I think they realized they can offer QSD and it will still be seen as FD - except that those that want table service will either pay out of pocket or upgrade, paying the difference.

Once fall offers come out and there's no FD, then we can speculate as to why. We are not there yet...

I think the theory that Disney is trying to shore up summer reservations, before moving to discount fall reservations with free dinning makes more sense.

I, too, think they are focusing on summer before moving on to fall. Now whether or not the fall promo will be FD is still yet to be seen. That said, several of the restaurants that participate in the dining plan are not Disney owned...therefore any profit loss would hurt the parent company of that restaurant and not necessarily Disney.

They are also still offering FD to the UK travelers for 2011. It is more to do with Summer not being booked up.

Here is my theory.

I think they are waiting a little bit to see what the impact of Harry Potter is going to have on their bookings. I think the more it looks like people are going to US for Harry Potter, the better the discounts at Disney.

Just my .02.

Totally agree! There is so much hype about HP right now. It's everywhere! I expect it to draw record numbers so for WDW to attract visitors there will have to be excellent promos.
