Unofficial Guide says MK on Saturday--REALLY?

all this being said, let me add another of my two cents... lol

last trip, our MK day was a wed or thurs i believe...

there were no emh days at the time...
it was sept, so it was off season, now every other park ws pretty much empty not many lines pretty much no wait just walk on....
MK big difference!
It was still wonderful compared to going in june lets say, but MK always draws a bigger crowd!

I dont know if there is a non crowded day at MK?????? :confused3

The UG conflicts with Tourguide Mike on what parks to visit/what days. :confused3 Ugh. I think they both agree to avoid the parks in the morning when the park has an EMH morning. And to think I was planning to do just the opposite!

I'm starting to think I should just throw the guides out about which day to go where. Soon everyone will read a book and go the day the book says and that day will be crowded. Plus all these things about crowds on EMH days is theory right? Didn't EMH start this year? How are they going to know how crowds will be in the summer (busy times) when it's not the summer. Then certain guides have different opinions. Unless it's July or August I've decided not to worry about crowds since hopefully it won't be that bad (unless holiday, etc, but when we are going it's not). And just go to the park when it's convient- if you want to go to EMH go to EMH if it's convient to you. If not, go whenever you want. I've thought so much about this and drawn up differnet plans and gone crazy (as you can see from my 50 posts) and figured I don't care when EMH is I'm going to try to go to a few of them.

My best success with crowds at the MK have been on Mondays......not SATURDAYS!!!!! But any day at Mk is a good one!!!!!!!!!

Good idea--those guides are just that -guides. They are hardly gospel. Whatever day you plan on going to a particular park--just go!! It's not worth agonizing about, that's for sure!!

PS just between you and me---I hear that the MK on May 11 between 9:18 AM and 2:47 PM will be an excellent time to go :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

My understanding of the UG saying MK is ok on Saturdays is that applies during the summer only and not the rest of the year. The theory being that locals stay away from MK on the weekend during the summer because they know all of us out-of-towners are there. But then when it is not summer the locals come out and MK gets crazy on a Saturday. I will actually being having my first experience with WDW during the summer coming up in June. We have always gone in Sept, Oct or Nov and during those trips MK was a mob on Saturdays. On some trips we had no choice but to go to MK on a Saturday because that was the only day there were fireworks or Spectro. From what I have heard, during the summer MK is crazy no matter what day it is.

Good point about locals. They may have seasonal passes that block them out for the summer so most of the guests are from out of town and many are following EMH. The locals probably have a waterpark pass ......... I'd probably attempt MK on a Sat in the summer over TL/BB.

we're planning on MK for lunch on a Tues,
back to MK Wed night for Wishes, Thurs morn for the mtns, and back the following Wed night for their late night hrs

I also avoid the MK on Saturdays (and usually Sundays as well). It definitely is a lot more busy on the weekends.

I avoid MK on Saturdays at all costs. Back in 99 Sunday was the best day in January for Mk.. then when the brought back EMH, they made one in MK on Sunday. That ruined Sunday! Saturday is ALREADY crowded, so this past trip in January, we stayed away from MK all weekend. Ive also tried going to MK on a weekday when they were showing Spectro. Im used to NO crowds as we go every January/early February and when even THAT day had MK way more crowded than usual, I was frustrated. SOOOOOooooo from now on, Its no MK on Saturday or Sunday, and Im only hopping over during the WEEK to see Spectro at night. Ive gotten very, very spoiled going in the off season!

We were there last month and Saturday was not at all bad at MK. Friday was awful, and Sunday seemed quite busy, although we just stopped back to buy a souvenir and didn't ride the rides that day. Based on my recent experience, the guide is right.

that is good to know Beeeecause that is the day thet the UG says to go when we are there and for the first time I am following the UG's advice.

actually, we normally avoid all of WDW on weekends... we go to discovery cove on weekends... because I know what the crowd there will be ...No more then 1000

Hi folks,

I expect we'll have a new version of the "Best Days" calendar out in the next ten days or so. The new version will incorporate the wait time data we've collected since January 2, when the new EMHs went into effect. It'll also include the results of a guest survey we did, where we asked more than 350 families which parks they visited on which days. It'll also include the details of our discussions with other research groups, including Consumer Reports and the Department of Transportation.

The early results (from the survey, the DOT and Consumer Reports) all indicate Saturday should be a good day to visit the MK. The survey results, in particular, show that Saturday is the second slowest day at that park (Tuesdays are the least-busy, Sunday's the busiest). And the difference between Tuesday/Saturday and the other days is fairly large.

How large? Even assuming no locals were surveyed (not true, but go along with me), the number of Orlando-area residents would have to exceed the number of guests from everywhere else in the world, and the locals all have to visit only on Saturdays, and then only the Magic Kingdom, for that ranking to change. I think those conditions are fairly unlikely. In any event, the actual wait times in the parks will be a key component either way.

One thing I think we're fairly confident of is that Sunday's a bad day for the Magic Kingdom. By a wide margin, families indicate that Sunday is their preferred day to visit that park. This fits in well with the DOT's data, which show Saturday to be the most common day for families driving on their vacation. (And driving accounts for more than 90% of domestic leisure travel.) And the wait times on Sunday seem to bear this out.

This also matches Consumer Reports' analysis, which we confirmed with several DTD hotels, that Saturday generally has the highest hotel occupancy rates.

In short, more families driving to Orlando get there Saturday than any other day. They spend the night at their hotel, and the first park they visit is the Magic Kingdom.

One thing we're trying to figure out is why some parks seem to be slower on their EMH days than other days of the week. Epcot's EMH morning on Monday, if I recall correctly, doesn't translate to large crowds on that day. It could be that EMH doesn't hold as much appeal for those parks, or that people tend to visit parks in a certain order regardless of EMH schedule. Any ideas you may have on this would be appreciated.

Finally, as Uncleromulus notes, if you're just going to the parks to have fun, ride a few rides, and soak up the atmosphere, any day's a good day. The "best days" recommendations apply mainly if your primary concern is to avoid crowds as much as possible. But I'd dispute the 2:47 pm time on May 11 - our models clearly indicate a time of 11:34 am. (Joke!)

On a side note: I'm still running about 300 emails behind, so I apologize in advance if I haven't yet got to everyone's questions. As of last week, I was still getting more than a hundred emails a day. Once spring break and Easter are over, things should get back to normal.

Thanks!

We were in MK this past Saturday. We had an 8:05 PS for Crystal Palace, and at 9 a.m. we walked onto It's a Small World (only because it was opening day for it). We then went on Pooh, Tea Cups, Goofy's Barnstormer, Mickey's Philarmagic, Buzz, Splash Moutain and Big Thunder Mountain RR. We didn't have waits for any of them though we did use some Fast passes. We left the park before noon, which I would advise no matter what day of the week you are going. We then returned later to see parades, eat and watch fireworks, but we didn't do any of the popular attractions in the evening.

Since MK's early entry is now on Friday mornings, Saturday mornings seem to be lighter. Saturday afternoons probably pick up later in the day as travellers arrive.

I was posting at the same time as Lentesta. Thanks for all the good information, Len. We actually avoided Epcot this past Monday because it was EMH. I wish now we would have gone.

I am kind of antsy - normally we would avoid MK on Mondays - conciereg told me one time that when people sho wup they start their vacations at MK. June in the UG says Monday the 6th is good. Anyway, will be interestingt to see how the UG sadvice plans out. Prior to reading we always did Early Entry... BUT I fidure we are going to try the UG way... we get to sleep in a little more that way. We have been getting up at 6:30 to 7am to get to the early entry parks 20 to 30 minutes before opening areound 7:30ish. So being able to sleep until 7ish to 7:30 to be at the parkss at 8:10ish to 8:30 would be nice

Len,

Thanks as always for the helpful info; I tend to favor research, analysis and hard data over anecdotes ;).

As for EMH, a few ideas (since you did ask);

1. Lack of awareness. Although we online fanatics (does that make you a professional fanatic?) track this stuff seriously, how aware of EMH is the typical guest, and how likely will change their plans?

2. Over-awareness. I know that the UG has always addressed the "too many people will know the 'secrets'" issue that marriedmarylander brought up, but is it possible that, after all these years, that "avoiding EMH mornings" has finally sunk into the general Disney population?

3. Increased use of biometric finger scans. Seems like these are blamed for everything else :rolleyes1 .

4. Too much EMH (I'm sorry, I still think of 'Emergency Medical Hologram' when I type that acronym). With every day having a hour in the morning and/or 3 hours at night, it might be that the "specialness" of EMH has faded.

Not that you don't have enough to do, but I would be curious to see how/if recommended park days have changed since the UG was first put together....

Thanks again!
