Experiences? Opinions? I've never taken an online course and am now looking at nothing but online courses because of my work schedule. Anyone have tales of their experiences with getting a degree online that they'd like to share. I'd love to hear about it. :)

There have been several threads on this recently. UofP has very mixed reviews. It has been accused of being a for profit organization that just focuses on getting students enrolled.

On a personal note, the financial institution that I work for does not view a degree from UofP in the same way as other universities. A better bet would be to find a more traditional brick and mortar school that offers online degrees.

Online learning is a great way to finish a degree if you are motivated, organized and can learn independently. It is an easier way to attend but it is not an easier way to learn. Lots of work but well worth it!

I see you are in MI. Check out Baker College. They have accelerated degrees for working adults. The cost is low, relatively speaking and you go year round in 6 week sessions.

I wouldn't do it....very expensive. It has very bad reviews all over the place. Apparantly, there is a PBS special you can view from that website.

Contact your local college and see what types of online classes they have. You will need to go in for a few but you may be able to take 70% or so on line.

All the main schools now offer online classes.

Thanks for the responses, they go along with what I've been reading. The thing that drew me to UoP is that I can take *every* class online. My job doesn't allow me the luxury of, as an example, having Tuesday and Thursday evenings guaranteed off. I will definitely look into other schools to see what they have available online. It's been a number of years since I poked around in this stuff, so hopefully there are some new opportunities for people like me.

I don't know what sort of degree you're persuing, but my public state university has several completely online programs. If you have to come in at all, its for a proctored final exam, but those are few and far between.

I think there are other better schools to take online classes with. Many accredited mainstream brick and mortar schools offer full online degree programs.

Not sure what kind of degree you are looking into, but if you need something that is entirely online look into Western Governor's University. It is a regionally accredited university which is the main thing to look for whether you attend school online or a brick and mortar school.

Like a previous poster remarked, it's not taken seriously by many HR departments. If you're after a graduate degree, check out Michigan State. I've attended/chaired conference sessions with the guy who runs it, and it's legit. If you're looking at undergrad programs, check out Central Michigan:

You're in Michigan, right?

If you are looking at any online or brick and mortar school check into their accreditation. They MUST be regionally accredited for your degree to be useful. If you are planning to try and transfer your credits to another institution at a later date, you also need to make sure they will transfer and that anything you have already taken will transfer in. Do as much research as you can on any online school and how it will be accepted in your field. If you will be required to have a license to work in your field, check with the licensing agency to make sure your degree will be recognized.

For instance I will be attending WGU. My credits will transfer in but will not transfer to another college. That's ok with me because I won't be transferring anywhere when I finish. It is regionally accredited and accredited by the NCATE (I will be getting a teaching degree). I have already contacted the state department of education and double checked that I will be able to be licensed.

I got on the Dis this morning ready to post this same question about UofP and came across this thread. I have enrolled at a local college for fall semester but then wanted some info about UofP. They were relentless about calling me. 4 times a day, usually while I was at work and couldn't pick up the phone................ I finally answered the phone and I really felt like the "recruiter" was trying to be my best friend so I would enroll. He was talking down about the school I have enrolled in too. Not very professional if you ask me. Later that night I got on-line and found alot of mixed reviews about UofP, mostly bad. Yesterday the guy called me back to see if I'd made a decision. I think after everything I've read about them, it's a big fat NO. I can't chance my credits not transferring or my resume being tossed aside because I have a UofP education. It's too much money to waste.
