I was on twitter tonight and I've been doing a lot of thinking regarding this issue. On twitter I saw a lot of buzz regarding rumors that universal has bought more land for a possible third park. Universal just opened transformers. With continued work on Harry potter, and Simpsons which look to be like huge expansions. Also universal has a new resort under construction. Now for disney just finishing new fantasyland which is a great new aspect to MK. Disney springs is getting redone. AK will get Avatarland sometime in the future if they ever start doing something or ever announce something. AoA is the newest resort which is now a year old. Disney keeps building more and more DVC villas and such. Finally my magic plus the most expensive thing on this list but the smallest because it goes on your wrist. Who's winning? Disney is moving ahead at a guest experience stand point but do guest really want that? Universalist building more and more rides and expanding a great deal. Now a rumor of a third park in the works! Disney needs to to step up there game. I've never been a huge universal fan I pretty much only go to disney parks but its beginning to look like universal is really gaining on disney with the parks. Epcot and DHS haven't seen anything major happen over the last several years, yes test track got refurbished greatly but that's not enough. DHS is the one park that will need something for sure and they need it like yesterday. But what will it be Carsland, Star Wars land, or both? And will that be enough to stop universal from gaining on disney or will disney need even more? It's never ending who's got the best of the best stuff but disney isn't really going back at universal with anything other than wristbands. Don't get me wrong i think it will be a great addition but disney needs to fire back at universal with attractions of some sort and maybe an or several expansions. When? Where? And how will disney react to everything going on with universal right now.

we travel over from the UK to holiday in Florida, we stay on site at Disney and travel to all the other parks from there. I'm a Disney girl at heart, we got married there and we go to Disneyland Paris yearly so I can get my Disney fix! I also really like universal but I have completely different views of the two different operations. universal rides, technology wise are better. Spiderman, Simpson's, harry potter, their amazing! universal rides seem to have a much shorter lifespan. since our 1st visit so many rides are different and the old classics like king Kong, jaws, back to the future have gone. this, in my view is a shame. yes theres always something new to see and convince people to visit but a lot of people like the classics. apart from the new harry potter bit I don't feel drawn in by the theming, I know I'm in a theme park.

now as for Disney I love the magic. I feel completely drawn in, I feel like a child walking down main street and I feel like a princess in fantasyland, all be it a 29 year old. I feel emotions on the rides, I'm flying over neverland and I'm trying to escape a yetti! this is what Disney do, they make you feel like your part of the films you've grown up with. their rides are timeless, I can imagine taking my grand children on splash mountain and them loving it as much as I do. their rides might not have the technology of universal but they have soul. I do not feel I'm at a theme park when I'm at Disney, it feels safe and warm, like home from the minute I arrive. the resorts are just like an extension of the parks.

I would always choose Disney over universal with no hesitation. yes the new rides at universal are exciting but nothing sticks with you all day. I want to be singing small world all day while wearing my Minnie mouse ears. to me Disney is the wise old grandad and universal is the annoying pre teen. there is no contest as to who I want to spend my time with!

Who's winning, Disney or Universal?

The answer is: Yes!

Universal is doing well and I am glad to see some awesome new rides and Harry Potter land. I want to visit Universal in LA, too.

I think Disney is on the verge of some great new updates, but Disney fans need not worry. Disney is light years ahead of all the competition in many areas. The key measure is attendance and Disney has all the top attended parks by far.

Actually, I think both are winning by Universal making some good rides and experiences. Competition is healthy. As a Disney fan I hope Universal continues to prosper and expand. More people from around the world will make Central Florida a destination. That being said, I doubt they would add a third park anytime soon. They need to do more with what they have. There resorts are terribly expensive, too. No budget options yet

well to start.........the rebuilding of Fantasy land, DTD, Avatar in AK, the oblivious but not official major expansions of DHS with Star wars and very possible Cars land.

The rumors of $2 billion in new *Disney Magic8, in new major attractions to Tomorrow land in MK, redo of Future world and a new country.

Rebuilding of the Poly and possibly a new Western resort near FW and WL.

The last two years we are seeing many attractions getting MAJOR refits, something Iger's bean counters have be holding back on and it seems they are seeing the light in guest comments and concern that the parks have been neglected in this way.

Granted not all official but much is likely down the road.

UNI is doing what they know...........thrill rides for the most part....that is what they market to, the thrill ride guests......and yes I agree that is good for them and Disney, bring more and new visitors to Orlando.

The bottom line here is Disney markets to everyone and does it amazingly well. Their *experience and magic and pixie dust* is still top of the line and head and shoulder above anyone else.

However this subject has been hashed over monthly for along time on the diz, everyone has their own opinions and some will disagree on mine and they are of course welcome too!

Yup. Well said.

For me, Disney have nothing to worry about. Quite the opposite, in my opinion. Universal are getting left behind and in the next 3-5 years, my prediction is that they start tying in with the other parks on the Flex Ticket list just to keep themselves in the game.

Universal have some massive issues. The first problem is they have no fresh new ideas. HP is their big draw, which they are expanding...OK...fair enough, but what about those of us that don't care about HP? The Simpsons expansion...really? It's just rehashing an old idea. Beyond that, there is nothing worthy of note.

Disney have acquired Pixar, LucasFilm, & Marvel. They didn't do that because they were bored.. they bought them to make money. It will not happen overnight, but you can bet your bottom dollar that they have plans to incorporate all of those things into the parks. They have infinite options for expansion that Universal just can't compete with. Rumours of Carsland, Star Wars expansion etc. will all come to life in some form.

There is no reason why they couldn't (and I genuinely think this is probably going to happen) build a Pixar, Marvel or Star Wars park. The success of Carsland and the scope of Pixar would lend itself to a Pixar park.

Disney's business strategy going forward is to get the guests saying on site and keeping them there by providing so much to do that rivals all of the other parks, there is very little time and little reason to wander off to the other parks. That much was obvious from the Q2 financial conference call.

Universal need to come up with something huge and they need to come up with it fast if they're going to hang in there in 5 years time. More HP and the Simpsons isn't enough.

If you think about it, if a family travels to Orlando for a week, with 4 existing parks and potentially a 5th, that's 5 out of 7 days that Disney can monopolize, if that family want to do a water park one day, Disney has 2 of those. There are hotels and resorts for all budgets and no need to hire a car if people stay in the Disney bubble.

There is a lot to come at Disney in the next few years in my opinion.

well i wouldnt say they have nothing to worry about..i dont think the great companies in history said "lets not worry about our competition." Microsoft probably thought they didnt have to worry about that old company called apple 15 years ago....

my example is this, if all of Orlandos tourist represented 100 people 10 years dsiney would have 85, uni 10, sea 5...today its more like 78, 17, 5 so times are a changing and maket share matters
is disney still king? of course but i would impress upon them to begin construction of avatar, star wars, and cars land because the boy who lived is going to cut into that market share some more the next two summers

great debate though

I agree with much of what you wrote, but there actually is a reason why they couldn't build a Marvel Park. Universal has the rights to Marvel for theme parks. Maybe a possibility of a resort, depending on how the language is stated, I was a bit confused by the wording in the contract for non-theme park related stuff.

You are correct for Orlando. Could be built at any of the other areas.

March was the first time I've been to Universal in over a decade, but we only really went to experience WWoHP. It was just DH and I, our 8 month old, and my parents. My parents aren't thrill riders (my mom loves HP, that's why she wanted to go). DH and I both enjoy thrill rides, but we didn't want to leave DD with my parents the whole day while we went and rode things. Universal just isn't as little kid friendly, IMO. I might go back in a few years after the HP expansion opens, but Seuss land and HP aren't enough for me to spend time over there each time we go to FL. There's a lot more that DD (and therefore all of us together) can do at WDW, so they'll continue to get our business. Unless Universal's rumored 3rd park were more family friendly, I don't see it taking our business away from Disney. The two parks just cater to different crowds, IMO.

I agree I don't understand the rebuilding poly either. They are redoing the rooms right now and there are plenty of rumors of a DVC being added though.

I think there are pros and cons to both. The bottom line is they are two totally different animals and both are well worth the admission. Here is my feeling after visiting the parks recently:

WDW...Magical feeling that can't be replicated...all staff at Universal was wonderful, but something about WDW is just special.

I agree with PP that the rides just go straight to your heart in WDW. Leaves you feeling all gushy :)

Dinning in WDW is AMAZING....Universal needs to amp up and have more themed dinning. We did 6 Character meals/dinning experiences in WDW, not one I would complain about. Worth every penny.

Truly for all ages!! Universal is really for 5/6 and up. My 2yr old went with my mom and other family to AK while we were there. I am so thankful we let them take him. I couldn't imagine having him there all day...it would have been painful. Nothing really at all for little ones to do. Even my 6 yr old had to miss a few things, but still worth it!

Universal seemed to have a better resort feeling. Of course it being a lot smaller had a lot to do with it. Honestly, I wasn't impressed with the Disney "bubble". It has been yeas since I have been onsite so I kinda forgot what it was like. I personally, wouldn't have stayed at a value or mod after what I saw. I was curious because we were staying off site and did lots of exploring. We had a couple of non park days and we scheduled things at some resorts and even checked things out to see if when my youngest is a little older if we would want to stay on site. The values were a free for all and not clean IMO( I have seen people post they are glorified Motel 6's and didn't think that was the case, but now I can understand the comparison). They are just not worth the extra money when I can stay in a beautiful 6 bedroom home with private pool only minutes from the park.

I would guess we got there faster than anyone staying at a value and using WDW transportation. Driving and valeting at CR Start to finish was in MK in 20-25 minutes in the morning. If I did stay it would only be at the Poly, CR or GF These hotels were stunning(we didn't visit every single resort, but enough to get the sense of what each level has to offer), but with three kids I don't know if it is worth the premium price to get the 2bdrm suites and with 3 kids that is the smallest amount of rooms I would do.

I was even disappointed in POR, which is one I thought we would like after viewing online pics, but just wasn't impressed while touring when my kids were on the Pirate Cruise :sad1:

I found the Boardwalk area to be wonderful at Universal...a nice perk to staying there plus with the FP as an added bonus think it is more appealing. Great restaurants all over, movie theater and all right there. No transportation needed. I didn't have time to check out any of the hotels there, so I cannot comment on the quality, but nothing there looked like it would be a value or a mod from the outside on the boardwalk. It appeared to be all upscale, but I know looks are sometimes deceiving.

In WDW the transportation is a nightmare. The lines for buses and monorail....no way, wouldn't do it. You are sardines. They don't really offer premium parking unless you valet at a resort and that is a disappointment.
In Universal you can valet your car and even pay extra so it is literally right outside the entrance when you leave. This is worth every penny when you have tired kiddos, to be in your car within a minute of leaving the park.

Not enough Thrill rides...though I don't think WDW really wants this. I love the roller coasters and the special effects at Universal/IOA is unbeatable. I will say the animatronics at WDW are way better than what's at Universal. Compare Dudley Doo right to Splash Mountain and it is kinda cheesey(and Ursula in LM...Wow she looked real!).

I assume you're just speculating on the numbers here.
I'll change the speculation a bit.

If there are 100 tourists to work with, you have to remember that many of them overlap. People coming to Disney go to Uni, and Seaworld.

I think it'd probably look more like
Disney 98 Uni 10 Sea 5 --> 10 years ago
Disney 96 Uni 17 Sea 5 --> Now

I'm just making up my numbers, but I think it's safe to say that not 100 percent of tourists are hitting only one destination, therefore you wouldn't need to "add up" to 100.

For me it's Disney. Although I enjoy Universal, it's still not magic like Disney. I have fun at Universal, but I have a memorable experience at Disney.

As far as you saying about the nightmare of WDW transportation, it can get that way, but it does depend on when you go AND how you do it. For example, our last time we went which was during Christmas time last year, it is obviously busy. But we had the BEST experience in the transportation dept than we ever had. We planned it to hit the EMH at whatever park it was that day, and some opened at 7am. I was surprised that not many were on these buses when we got on them at our resort. So we would do about 4-5 hours in a park, then get back on the bus to the hotel for rest, which hardly anyone was on those buses back at that time. Most people were coming in as we were leaving. We would go back late afternoon or early evening to another park for dinner or hit some attractions. I think we stood up once on a bus and a few times had some maybe full ones during an evening. But just a little planning and doing it different than we had before paid off. With kids, the early time may not work! I understand your situation if that's the case of not doing it that way.

Also, you weren't too impressed with the Value Resorts. I don't mind staying there. Of course, one perk that we try to get when we are going is the free Dining Plan, so then it really pays off and makes the stay there even more worth it. Having said that, we did stay at All Star Movies last time and it was decent, but nothing to brag about. We have stayed at POP twice, and we love it there. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

I know my thoughts are different since it is just my wife and I. With kids, the perspective changes.

Am heading to Universal Hollywood in early Sept and can't wait to ride Transformers!!

I don't think Disney have anything to WORRY about, there is work to do, undoubtedly, but they hold all the aces. Many people (myself included) go every year but skip Universal a lot of the time. I haven't been since 2008 and I won't be going this year or next. It offers nothing for me. The only changes have been HP which isn't my thing. Plus their express pass rip off puts me off a lot.

Disney are playing the longer game, they have acquired key brands, they're currently dealing with the infrastructure and streamlining through My Magic + and the new attractions are coming. They didn't buy these franchises to do nothing with them.

It's correct that they couldn't build a Marvel Park with the contractual issues but there are certainly other things they could do with it, including a themed resort possibly. I personally think that the likely choice will be a Pixar Park because it has more scope and Carsland has done well. DHS will undergo a massive overhaul to the area around Star Tours for Star Wars "land" and they'll add to Epcot too.

I still feel that Avatar might go by the wayside until the 2nd movie comes out in 2015. I think there are a few niggles around it that just don't work, partly putting it into AK and partly the prospect that Avatar 2 will tank.

i see what you re saying although 47 000 000 to 14 000 000 makes those numbers closer to gether and i would imagine in 2016 those numbers wil be something like 48 000 000 to 18 000 000

i wonder if Staggs worries about universal and marketshare?
