We should be visiting Universal Studios from Anaheim sometime from 26th October to 3rd November, probably a weekday, but nothing is definite yet.

How necessary is it to buy front of the line passes at that time of year?

When we visited U.S. in Orlando we stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel which gave us the Express Passes. Do any hotels near Universal Studios Hollywood offer anything like that? Wondering whether it is worth us staying overnight nearby.

I was surprised to see the park closes around 5-6pm (because of the season and Horror Nights I suppose) and think we might need more than one day to see it all plus Citywalk.

I doubt you'd need one for those dates. But if you're already thinking of 2 days you might try the first w/o the pass and see if you really need one for the 2nd. They're awfully expensive to buy and then find it's unneccessary.

Tip: do the downstairs part ( w/ Jurassic Park and Mummy ) early and the tram later. Almost everyone does them in the opposite order -- morning trams get long lines.

Simpsons will get long lines too - so hit that first I'd say.

Yes, they do here is the link to their website that tells you the different packages. http://www.universalstudioshollywood.com/ticket_hotel.html
They also have a buy one day get the second day free ticket that would allow you more time at the parks so you can take your time and see more.
