Hi all. Well I’m back from Universal and on my last day of captivity er, quarantine! Just a few thoughts/info about my experience.
Our dates were 11/27 - 12/9.
I flew with Alaska Airlines. IMO one of the best airlines around. 5 stars. On the way to Mco I had a row in premium economy to myself. On the return trip I was in 1st and seat next to me was open. I’m a mileage member so often get free upgrades. Alaska doesn’t pack you in. No one was sitting next to a stranger. Gate was very organized too. No crowding to board, it was all very orderly.

We stayed at Hard Rock. Because of close proximity to the parks we mostly walked. Only used boat one night coming back from City Walk. Hotel was great. I didn’t know what to expect with how they were doing things. I did get housekeeping once mid stay on day 5 or 6. And if we needed any extra supplies for room, all we had to do was send text and it was brought up.
Temp was taken daily when you leave hotel and wrist band given. At security they double check band.
Hand sanitizers at elevators, entrances, and multiple locations.

I found it easy to keep social distancing at the parks. With potential of bottlenecks in Diagon Alley we went first thing before crowds. Hogsmead was a little more difficult to avoid in afternoons because of Hagrids. Got to go when you can get an opening. We were able to use the App to reserve times, but if you didn’t start looking first thing to nail down return time you don’t ride. People said they sometimes release more times later but that wasn’t my experience.
People were pretty good about wearing masks at the parks with the exception of Hagrids queue. Maybe because it was a longer wait, but you were always moving. However 2 people near me felt they could either take off mask or have nose out, same as not wearing. I won’t rant, but I was pretty angry at their selfishness.

Otherwise the Parks did a great job. At every ride, or show they pumped sanitizer directly on your hand. No one shared your row on any ride. In shows you were told where to sit. They made a point in the shows of letting us know all the seats were sanitized in between shows.

Hand sanitizer stations everywhere. At end of attractions, lockers, restaurants, and saw staff cleaning lots.
Restaurants had tables distanced. It was good except for kids allowed to run around playing around other tables!
.

Great trip and felt quite safe. But this is my last trip until we don’t have to quarantine anymore.
Hopefully will be able to get vaccine by late spring/early summer and don’t have to quarantine otherwise our Aug trip is a no go.

Glad you had fun. I’m there now and will return after New Years celebrations for a short time. Doubt I’ll even get through quarantine before returning to Fla. And I’ll feel safer in Fla.

Thanks for the report. I was wondering how it all went. Glad to hear you had an uneventful (of negative events) time.

Then why bother coming back? If you feel safer in Florida and are already planning to go before your quarantine is up, why dont you stay there? Seems like a hassle for a quick turnaround.

I’m confused too about going back in under 2 weeks. I only felt safe at the Universal hotels and parks because of the strict protocol . I wouldn’t feel safe in Florida in general because there are no rules. Masks aren’t mandated or social distancing. It killed me not to go to the Outlet on Black Friday lol. But didn’t want to risk it.

I'm a little confused because aren't you breaking quarantine by leaving your house to go to the airport to leave Canada again? You aren't supposed to leave your house during quarantine unless it's to seek medical attention.

Something doesn’t add up. You said in another post you were visiting with family over Christmas.

Spouse and I will eat out Christmas Eve. Daughter her husband and my parents will be over to eat Christmas Day.

And you can’t fly back before your quarantine is up, you will be breaking quarantine to do so. So what’s the real story here. You are either just ignoring the quarantine rules or you are making things up.

@Sue M I was wondering how your trip went! I am soooo glad you had a great time, despite all the craziness of the times right now. Hearing this, makes me heart happy and brings back some some faith that hopefully with the vaccine that some sense of normalcy will start to happen again. Hopefully by this time next year, things will look way different in the parks compared to now.

I’m hoping BC starts testing people entering at the airport like AB started. How is the program going?
Maybe by summer things will start to improve. I hope we’ll get vaccinated by late spring/July fingers crossed. The news of new strains of the virus is scary. Won’t be going away again until we don’t have to quarantine.

Yes you can. Don’t have to stay the entire 14 days. I will call the required phone number, drive directly from my home in Elora to the US and fly out. I’ll stay 4 days.

I am. I have a house in Fla and am there for Christmas and New Years. Been here for months.

Before i start my questions I want to apologize for taking this thread off-topic. I enjoy reading first-hand accounts of how travel is going for those who've ventured out and I'm specifically interested in how big areas like both Universal & WDW are implementing safety protocols. It's different than reading a news report or a blog posting from a travel related source. I just thought that since others were wondering about the same things I'm going to be asking about they might be interested in the responses.

I'm not looking to get into a debate over how anyone feels about the stated health mandates that we have been told to follow nor do I care to discuss the whys. I just want answers to some very specific questions that I feel I am well within my rights to ask. The reason I feel I NEED these answers is because of the highlighted words in your one comment. You are talking about a small community that is within my health unit and I'm fully aware of what our health mandates are. I have very close friends who own businesses, live & work in that area and my sister has inlaws that work in both the ER AND the ICU units at Groves Memorial Hospital which services Elora.
You weren't clear in any of your comments when you used the words "here" and "there"

When did you arrive back in Canada from Florida?
How did you travel from Florida to Canada?
What kinds of questions were you asked at the border regarding your intentions about quarantine? (I'm very interested in what's being asked of citizens when they are returning home)
Did you wait the full 14 days before you went OUT to eat in Elora??

Did you fill out contact information with the restaurant you ate in and if so were you actually allowed in if you weren't here for a full 14 days?
You said you'll stay for 4 days. Stay WHERE?
I'm extremely concerned that if in fact you are/were (not sure, you weren't very clear with your timeline) in Canada for less that 14 days and then chose to go OUT TO EAT that you may have put people I love in danger. I feel I have a moral obligation to inform anyone who works in a restaurant in our area to pay very close attention to themselves and family members for potential symptoms.

Again, I don't want to debate the whys or argue the *shoulds* I just want some concrete answers to specific questions. If you choose to go between Florida and Ontario when we've been told not to travel for non-essential reasons that's your decision and I can have my opinions on that but that's not what I'm questioning. When you put others at risk that's on you and I feel that I'm within my rights to find out if you have taken the necessary precautions to keep them safe.

@Donald - my hero
I think Whitecat is in Florida for Christmas and returning to Canada after New Years. That's how I read it anyways.
I'm curious how Whitecat is able to drive across the border. Must have dual citizenship? Are they letting you drive across because you have property there? I ask because I know people that own property an hour away on the US side and are not allowed to cross by land. Just curious if other border guards are allowing it at different crossings.

I hope that's the case. I still have some concerns with what exactly is being asked of people who are entering Canada and what instructions they're being given regarding quarantine procedures. My understanding was 14 days at home, period. And as you mentioned how the heck is someone allowed to drive back and forth across the border so freely, as much as they want, when others are being denied the same ability? I thought the fact that the border is closed for everything other than essential travel such as the trucking industry means just that, you can't drive back and forth when it suits your needs. I didn't think it matters if you own property, at least it doesn't for US citizens who have dwellings HERE, certain parts of our "cottage country" were like ghost towns this year. Perhaps they have a situation that involves dual-citizenship or one is CDN and the other is US? Just curious about this because it sounds like a bigger loophole than the "you can still fly" one.

@White Cat I have to add that I find your posts about jumping back and forth to Canada/Florida to be a total slap in the face to those of us who are staying close to "one" home and patiently waiting to take leisure trips. I'm not certain you realize that is how your comments are being received.

So the couple in Ontario that have the new variant from the UK, they are now saying that they were in close contact with someone who recently returned from the UK. That means that person was not properly quarantining.

This is just to remind people how extremely important following that 14 day quarantine is. Those two people would have been infected if that person had done what they were supposed to. And how many other people were then infected by those 2 people?

I know for me SIL she just came back from Texas and had to quarantine. They made her download an app on her phone that makes sure she stays home. As well as they call her daily to make sure she isn't going out.

I agree with you fully but I also blame the government for sending mixed messages. Stay home but yet it’s ok to travel back and forth if you want to. Why are people allowed to do that if not essential?

I wonder why it’s so inconsistent. I am just finishing up my quarantine after returning from the US and no app was made to be downloaded onto my phone that makes sure I stay home, nor has anyone called me to inquire about the status of my quarantine. Perhaps they randomly select travellers to follow up with (similar to “enhanced screening” at the airport)?
