universal orlando vs calif

Does the park in Orlando compare to the one in California? I'm thinking about going to DL /DCA in Dec and trying out US.

I have been to both many times. I love the Universal in Hollywood with the outstanding, long tram ride (definitely takes you behind the scenes) and everything, but honestly, there is no comparison. There is so much more to do at the Universal in Orlando. Remember, there are two parks, instead of just one, so you get almost everything the Universal Hollywood park has, except for Backdraft, plus many, many more incredible attractions. I also think the Citywalk in Orlando has a slight edge to the one in California. There are no true "on site" hotels in California. They are owned by Sheraton and Hilton and do not have the agreement Loews (the resorts at Orlando) has for the Front of the Line Access. That, in and of itself, makes it superior to the Universal in Hollywood. All that being said, I would jump at the chance to go to either one. (traffic and location is more nerve wracking in California.) Any other questions, please feel free to ask.

I just saw where you said you are going to California anyway and should you try it. Definitely!!! Just know it's not quite as incredible as the one in Orlando.

I think if you are going to DL anyway, then you should add on Universal if you've never been before. It is a very different experience, particularly with the tram ride as rlduvall mentioned.

But I agree that Universal Hollywood isn't someplace I return to each trip to DL. I only go there once every few years to check out the new attractions. (Whereas, I could go to DL/DCA every year! I try to alternate with WDW...)

I would say only go to Universal Hollywood if you are interested in the tram ride around the sets. Backdraft is a good special effects fire show, but not worth the hassle of going if that's the only new thing you'll see. I loved the tram ride. You get to see sets from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Psycho, Back to the Future, The Mummy, numerous old Westerns and horror movies, and some TV shows and others I've probably forgotten. But you are on the tram the whole time, so it's not like you get to walk around and really examine all these interesting places. I hope this helps with your decision!

If you do the v.i.p tour in hollow wood you get to get off the tram at certain places. You get to go front of the line for the rides and you take a private more personilized tram tour with 16 people max. and you get to look around and get off the tram more.

Note: this was pre-9/11 I do not know if they changed it.

sorry to just but in, but we were thinking about going to dl citywalk on new years eve, would this be a good idea? we have not been to calif. before so dont know the areas. we want to go out new years, but not to the parks, any help?

I agree with the above posters about the differences between Universal-Orlando and Universal-Hollywood. If it's important to you, we've found that the better entertainment/musicial groups (Blues Brothers, etc.) is in Hollywood. The same with the stunt shows. The talent pool is better out in California, in my opinion.
