Being a family of five the costs mount up rapidly, was thinking of going to universal just for a day in October this year, can you do most of it in a day and where will I get the cheapest tickets?
My boys are 18, 11 and 9.

first of all, there are 2 parks at Universal. And October has HHN parties, which means Universal Studios closes at 5pm on most days, and Island of Adventure closes at 7pm

If you want to do both parks in one day, you'll need park to park tickets (same as Disney's hopper)
I wouldn't advise to do only one park and skip the other. Or if you really need to, do Island of Adventure (which has Harry Potter) but be aware that you won't be able to do both parks in one day, not even by a longshot.

I know it's a lot of money, but the first day of a theme park ticket is the most expensive.
you get the 2 parks bonus ticket for £106pp this gets you 14 days unlimited entry ( http://www.attraction-tickets-direct.co.uk/universal-orlando-resort/universal-2-park-bonus-ticket )

Universal 1 day park to park ticket is $128 + tax ( $139 or £95)

so for 11 quids more per person, you get 14 days instead of just one.

(a 2 day park to park ticket direct with universal is $158 or £105 so you might as well go for the 14 days bonus ticket)

You could book into onsite hotel for 1 night and get unlimited express passes for 2 days for everyone and early entry. You still need to buy park admission though.

if you have never been there 1 day wont get it' if you stayed 1 night on site with unlimited front of line access maybe..there are some big lines so noway

If you are thinking of just doing one park, ie Universal not IOA, then if you get there for opening you will def be able to do most of it in October. But as others have said, you might as well go for the 14day pass as its worth it. We normally go in November and can do both parks in one day but we do not do all the rides. Although the horror nights are on certain days if you look at the park hours its still open to 7 or 8 o'clock most days.:)
