There are only two on property hotels. Both are a bit far to walk to Universal and up a steep hill but offer free shuttles that take maybe 5 minutes each way. The only advantage I see is not having to drive your car to the Universal parking lots. The shuttle makes it quick and easy to go back and forth to your hotel especially if you stay late to catch a movie or dine at CityWalk. There are other hotels nearby that also offer free shuttles but they aren't as close.

I've been wondering this too. Although parking is like $15 bucks, it's probably still cheaper than staying on site. Personally, I'd probably rather stay off-site at a cheaper resort and just pay to park at the park for the day.
