Universal for the day

We want to take the kids to Universal just for the day during our vacation. We plan on staying on property at Disney, and it seems silly to change hotels. Where is the best place to rent a car just for the day. Does Disney have any car rentals on site?

There are Car Care Centers on site (including one at the Dolphin hotel). The center will pick you up from your Disney hotel to get your car. Renting a car is a good way to go. You can get a Mears shuttle, but that is a per person fee, I think.

Just some extra info...We went to Universal for 2 days during our last WDW trip (5 years ago). It may be VERY crowded at Universal with the Harry Potter area opening up at Islands of Adventure this month, so plan to get there before opening. Guests staying at on-site hotels there get front of the line access with their room key. They do not have a similar system comparable to Disney's Fastpass anymore. There is an Express plus option for an extra fee. Have a great time!

Alamo and National both have onsite locations at the Car Care Center. Rates can be checked online at www.alamo.com.

Avis and Budget both have location in hotels on Hotel Plaza Blvd.

If that's the only reason you need a car, and you're just doing a day, I'd say just take a cab if you can fit. It's likely to be less than a rental (especially after adding in what you'll pay for parking) and really easy. Disney can call you a cab from the front desk of any resort and there are tons of cabs available when you want to come back. We've done it that way several times.
