Did Universal offer any great fall deals last year to try to compete with Disney's free dining offer? I was just curious if they might have any deals coming up this year that would cover the August 13 - Sept 30th time frame since Disney is now offering the free dining promotion again.

I don't think they did. We stayed onsite both at WDW and USO during the free DDP last September, and I don't remember any extra perks being offered at USO to compete with WDW.

I'm curious, tho, now if USO will do something. We're APHs to USO and WDW, and we're FL residents, so the DDP doesn't make a lot of financial sense for us to do. We also always head down to Orlando during September and hit all the parks, but after last year's chaos with all the WDW dining places, I'm not sure we would want to be dining at any WDW restaurants during the free DDP.

If USO does offer something, I hope they "think outside the box," so to speak, and offer incentives for everyone.

Well, in September last year, if you were an AP holder, you got stay 3 nights, get your 4th night free. Our RPR Club rate worked out to average $187 per night. Awesome! :)

Hope they do offer something. I am staying 10 at wdw final 4 nights at US if the deal is good enough. I am looking for PBH or HRH, but the ap rate is still 233 or 260 for my nights.

We stayed at Portofino Bay hotel for 4 nights last Sept. and payed around $225, what we normally pay for HRH. We booked thru AAA.

Same here, we stayed early Oct (1st-5th) and got fourth night free, paid $129 per night .. so it was even less with 4th night free!

We stayed @ Portofino last year and had a HORRIBLE experience. I know, I know it's the Portofino. It was so bad that a week after we got home the manager called and wanted to again extend her apologies. She stated that when we come back to place the ressie through a manager @ the hotel instead of the normal ressie line, she said they would give us a discounted rate. We had no intensions of going to WDW again this summer but thanks to free dining we will be able to go for a week. The kids loved IOA and Universal so we knew another trip there was in order. I called and spoke to a manager a few days ago and she referenced our records from last year. She put me on hold, a short time later she came back on the line and asked me which of the three hotels I would like to stay at. The kids had already let me know that HRH would be their choice, so HRH it is. All of a sudden I got an o.k. I have you registered on such an such date, blah, blah, blah. Oops, I told her I was only calling to see what the rate would be (maybe we could do better with AAA). My mistake it was, they have us in the kids suite club level for $179/night. Yep, that's really what I said. I told her that I would like her to email me the confirmation just for my records KNOWING good and well that it was a mistake, she must mean 579/ night or something. No can do for the email but it was faxed just 20 minutes later. I just about fell over!!!!!!!!!!! I guess Tinkerbell is spreading her pixie dust all over Orlando these days. I hope all the rest of my fellow Disers get a little dust their way too.

Hockeymommy what happened at PBH ? I have it booked but may change to hrh ?

We went last year after being @ CBR for 8 nights. I loved CBR and couldn't wait to get to PBH since it was supposed to be so nice. For three months prior to us getting there I requested a non pet room due to my daughters allergies. I was told that this was not a problem at all.
We got there after a long day @ AK, hot and sweaty all I wanted to do was take a shower. When we got to our room it had the worst oder, I could not put my finger on it at first. However, with a little looking around the room it became very clear what exactly it was. There was mold, yes mold growing on the walls and curtains. That was only the start of the horror of what was to come. I knew that the mold wasn't the only thing I was smelling. I ended up getting down on my knees (on a FILTHY floor) to look under the bed. UGH UGH UGH UGH, I found a small piece of what appeared to be dog poop. I could not get to the phone fast enough to call the front desk! When I spoke to the front desk they acted like I was joking or something. I think when I started crying they figured out that I must be serious. They sent a maid and a maintenance guy to the room to see about the problem. Sure enough they found the same things I did. I demanded a new, clean, non-moldy room. Nope, the hotel was booked solid, so were RPR and HRH. What are we supposed to do now I asked. I was told that they would send a cleaning crew to clean the room and shampoo the carpets. At that point I had no other choice but to say o.k.
We changed our clothes and went to Hoop De Doo, you can only imagine what a great time we had there. All we could think about was the room, what a waste of $150 that was! When we came back to our room the carpets were wet and the chairs were in the bathroom. After taking the chairs out of the bathroom I went to take a long hot shower, Ahh (or so I thought). Our tub had 6 large chips out of it and a HUGE crack all the way down the middle. I'm pretty sure that there is no way you could bath in it as it wouldn't hold the water. I was going to call the front desk, but as my husband pointed out there was nothing they could do for us with no other rooms available. For three nights we stayed in the moldy, poopy smelling room only as long as we had to. We did everything to stay out of the room, even if we were tired. When checking out they actually had the nerve to ask how our stay was, I just looked at them and started laughing. Are they seriously asking me this? After much self refrain I simply stated that it was the worst hotel I had ever stayed in and left it at that. A week or so later I got a phone call from the GM stating how sorry they were about our stay. She said when we come back to Orlando please call and they will give us a "deal".
I called a few days after booking our August Disney trip and spoke to another manager. I explained what had happened and told her what the other manager had said.
Our room had been booked @ HRH like I posted before. However, last week I recieved a call from yet another manager and was informed that if they are going to give a discounted room for a customer service issue it has to be at the same hotel. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!! I either pay rack rate at HRH or take my chances with PBH. I was assured by them the hotel has had a multi million dollar refurbishment, I assume that means not mold or poopies will be present.
So after many calls and many conversations we are now booked at PBH. My only concern now is will they change me or their policies again? With all that has been going on with the meal/movie coupons I don't have much faith in their customer service commitment.

I have two kids that play hockey. That menas for 6 months out of the year we travel at least twice a month. We stay in all different kinds of hotels. I am not pickey, but some things just don't go over well whether your spending $59/ night or $400/night. I only say this so I don't get attacked as some high maintenance, never pleased spoiled girl. Clean is clean and poop is poop!

P.S. One night after the parks we came back only to find out maid service had taken the dirty towels and left no clean ones. I guessed that maybe they wanted to to drip dry.

We're going this summer, but can't take advantage of the promotion. Our "kid" is considered an adult. No freebies for us. An incentive that would benefit everyone equally would be great. :thumbsup2 Buy 3 nights, get the 4th free works for me. :teeth:

That's an amazing rate! Wouldn't it be great if all their hotels were the same rate they opened with. :cloud9: Okay, someone can wake me up now. :rolleyes1

Hockeymommy, sorry to hear about that experience that must have been awful. :grouphug: I hope the renovations will have changed things.
At the minute the AAA rate is cheaper than the AP rate for PBH. :confused3

OK, so I'm planning my September trip to Universal and I was all ready to make reservations, but I'm wondering, should I wait? Any advice on how long I should hold out to see if a deal pops up?

You can go ahead & book your hotel now. They'll adjust your rate at any time, if it goes lower. You just have to call & ask. :)
