Universal Career Path thread.

Hello DISboard people. It's that time in my life where I decide to be grown up and apply for school. I was interested in choosing a career path that would take me into the upper echelon of Universal employment. Would there be a specific major that I should focus on? or is there any major at all? I was looking at pursuing a Hospitality and tourism management major at UCF, but im open to all suggestions. Please help me out guys!

I think that would really depend on what you're looking to do. Both Disney and Universal have all types of positions - business, accounting, human resources, finance, etc. Hospitality & Tourism Management could land you in a position in a hotel, but business being a more broad field may be more easy to translate into an office type role. Some schools also have recreational management programs, though again, it's a pretty narrow field. Even though you aspire to work at Universal, I think the Disney college program would offer you great experience as well. Good luck!

The suggestions on major paths nkereina posted is a great start to what you may choose to go in to if you would like to work in the Theme Park industry. I can add a few things from my own personal experience as I am currently going through orientation and training now at Universal Orlando.

We have been told and shown videos of many team members at Universal that started out as low as a parking attendant and have worked their way all the way up to executive positions in the company.

They offer a great cross training and "ladder system" program for all full-time and casual (part time) team members that will assist you as well as help direct you to the career path you are interested in pursuing.

So just by getting your foot in the door at Universal or other theme parks, I am sure they all have these opportunities available to all team members, cast members, etc.

UCF would be a good way to go. I'd suggest getting a part-time job at Universal while attending school (the Rosen campus is about 15 minutes from the parks). There's a Theme Park Management track that features courses taught by current and former leaders from Universal and Disney. They offer a ton of networking opportunities too.
