Hi Girls,

I am sending my contract in the next few days and it asks if we are doing a unity candle.

I have never seen this in England. Is this a religious symbol or can it be used in a civil service?

I would love to include something different in our service.

from my take on it its your family lighting a candle then the grooms mum/dad doing the same and then you both take the candles and light the big one! I think it simbolises you coming together.

It is a symbolism of you and your husband and the two families coming together. Not everyone does this, some people have even done a sand ceremony.

The unity candle seems to be very common in the states, we instead did a unity sand instead, it represents the same thing, us coming together but I think it is beautiful just to have around the house. Here are pictures of us pouring.

It also works out well if the wedding is outside, do not have to worry about wind blowing out the candles

The groom pours a little bit first

followed by the bride pouring a little bit

Then both the bride and groom pour together to represent the couple coming together

On the front of the table is our finished product.

So pretty! Where did you get the vases? Did you bring them yourself? :goodvibes I like how the vases all look like they belong together.

The sand is a lovely idea to, I don't think I would have much success with getting that back to England in one piece.

We did unity candles. We were risking it a bit as we didn't have them till two days before the service. We got them from the Visitors Flea Market, she did us a excellent deal, they are beautiful, and I got them back to England without breaking.

It was nice touch to the service, we needed to make the service a little bit longer. Rev. Kevin Knox said a few words then we moved around to the table and lit the candles. It was suppose to be my mom and my husbands mom, but my husbands family didn't end up coming. So my mom lit both candles and was a step in mom for my husband.

We ordered the sand kit from the website www.sandceremony.com but it looks like it is underconstruction, but the website www.makingmemoriesandmore.net/sandceremony
has them too and different choices.

We had ours engraved which is awesome, they came packaged very nicely and comes with a styrofoam stopper. An easy way to travel once complete is to put in the stopper then wrap with saranwrap and put back in the box, the sand does not budge. We used the colors gray and light pink

KNJ- Those are our colours I'm going to have a look to see if they shipp to the uk
