United

I feel much better now! I plan to be prepared with plenty of our own snacks and drinks, and everyone will have their own entertainment system in case the choices for movies/tv on the plane are not so great.

no idea how the security system works in Canada but in the US you can't bring drinks through security. They will make you throw it out. Instead you have to go the the newsstand after security and spend a ridiculous amount of money for a bottle of water/soda/juice.

I am GUESSING you are flying from your home to Newark(or another US Hub) where you change planes?

I think (AM NOT SURE) that at your first US airport you go through customs and then they force you out of the secure area where you recheck your bags and then go through US security to get back into the secure area. (at least that is what appears to happen at Continental's Terminal C in Newark, NJ) So the US rules would apply. Probably best to findout from someone who knows for sure- dont take my word for it.

FWIW when we had the seatback system (orlando to newark) it was all free. Which was awesome.

In fact the only issue we had with our last flight was that there were some first class passengers who managed to convince the flight attendants that they were playing the wrong movie (on our flight Newark to Seattle when we just had the dropdown TVs). Halfway through Monsters University they just turned it off and put on the more grownup movie instead. I watched the FAs messing with the system (thinking they were fixing it) and was highly irritated when I found out what had happened. Pulled out the flight magazine to show them that the other passengers were 100% wrong. Alas the FAs didn't stop that movie, but put MU back on after it finished and offered free food and beverage to us, and, I assume, anyone else who might have noticed and talked to them. Doubt there were many others since it was a late night flight and we'd been delayed over 2 hours. I just hope those first class passengers realized what they had done later and felt ashamed for mixing up what direction we were traveling OR what date it was! (I know the FAs felt a bit silly)

I know i'm probably crazy but my biggest annoyance with the whole merger is the inflight entertainment. It's like a crapshoot. They could refit their whole flit in 30 days probably if it meant jamming more seat rows into the planes, but for something like getting the inflight amenities consistent seems to take years and years.

probably says something too about how smooth the merger went that all i can find it that ;) Everything else went well for us and we were even traveling the weekend when they switched the computer system.

Security is the same all over the world, as far as liquids being allowed through security.

When you fly from Canada to the US, you usually clear immigration/customs before leaving the country (some exceptions), so your arrival in the US is treated just as any other domestic flight.

Sorry security is nit the same all over the world. Australia for example has realized the liquid ban is a joke.

Flew United from Cleveland to Maui in June. Flew through LAX. We flew economy coach for 3 of the segments and first class on one. First class was wonderful. Coach was fine also. The only thing I found to be slightly annoying was you have to buy your food in coach. Our seats were towards the back of the plane. They always seemed to run out the hot food I wanted just before they got to me. :confused3

I just returned from a trip to Australia, flying from Houston. I had no issues whatsoever with United. Flights were on time, the flight attendants were courteous, food and beverage services were good and plentiful, multiple in-flight movies and tv shows were shown. The only thing I would recommend on a long flight (4+ hours) is upgrading to economy plus for the extra legroom.

United is our preferred carrier out of Newark. We have never had an issue with them. Planes are usually decent and reliable. We have their credit card so we don't pay for luggage, but it is at an extra $25/ for first bag if you don't have the card. You do at least get an assigned seat, so no worries there (love everything about southwest except this part).

Also, their change fees are terrible, as another said, $200 to change now. I've never had to change with them, so I don't know how flexible they are in the event of an emergency.

I think the purchasing of food in coach is pretty standard now, except for overseas flights.
